Ulster and Munster face each other in a monumental Irish derby in Belfast on Friday Evening in Round 7 of the RaboDirect PRO12 tournament. Since the Scarlets were victorious in Belfast on 21st February, Ulster have won seven straight matches on home soil in all tournaments, and currently top the PRO12 table. After beginning the PRO12 season with five wins on the trot, Ulster slipped up for the first time in the current campaign, when they travelled to Galway to face Connacht in Round 6, the last game they played before the European break.

Munster were beaten in Round 6 in Dublin against another Irish Province, Leinster, and will look to avoid back to back PRO12 defeats for the first time in the competition since April, when they travel to Belfast. If the Munstermen can avoid defeat on Friday, it will be a third successive fixture at the venue in which they have done so, and will be the first time that they have achieved such a record in Belfast since the second World War. Ulster's last victory against Munster was a narrow 19-17 triumph at Thomond Park in May 2014. Since when they have tried and failed four times to overcome their fellow countrymen.

Ulster are riding something of the crest of a wave as the go into Saturdays Guinness PRO12 fixture against fellow Irishmen Munster in Round 11 of the Guinness PRO12 tournament, which will be played in Belfast. The side from the North of the Emerald Isle have won their last four matches in all tournaments since they were beaten at the RDS by Leinster 3-8 at the end of November. A run of success that includes a record victory against French giants Toulouse in Belfast, followed by an away win against the same opponents in the Champions Cup, and an away win in Galway against Connacht, currently placed second in the RaboDirect PRO12 table. In stark contrast, Munster have lost five games on the trot in all tournaments, and have slipped to sixth position in the PRO12 table.

The sides have already met once this season, with Munster winning by 32-28 in Round 6 of the PRO12. If they win on Saturday, it will be their first win in Belfast since the 2010/11 season, when they last completed a season's double against the Ulstermen. However, Ulster haven't been beaten in Belfast in the PRO12 tournament since May 2014, when Leinster were the visitors, and Munster haven't won on the road since early November, when they beat Edinburgh in Scotland.

Belfast is set to witness a full blooded Irish derby on Saturday, when Ulster welcome Munster to the Northern Province, as third place faces second in the penultimate round of RaboDirect PRO12 fixtures. With the top two sides at the end of the regular season gaining the prize of a home semi-final, Saturday's match is of vital importance to both teams, even though though their position in the post-season play-offs is already secure. Ulster who are just a single point behind the Munstermen, will hope to continue the sort of form that they have shown all season in the PRO12 tournament in Belfast, where they boast the best home record of any of the 12 competing sides. All 10 games have been won, and a total of 44 points out of a maximum 50 have been secured on their own ground.

Both teams have identical records over the last eight rounds of PRO12 competition, with just a single loss each. Ulster were beaten by the Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade in early March. Munster were also beaten in Wales, by the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium 12-26 in Round 17. When the teams met in Munster earlier in the season, Munster won by just 21-20, but have not won in Belfast since 2007.

Ulster will hope that a return to their fortress home ground at Ravenhill, Belfast will see them return to winning ways against their fellow Irish province, Munster on Friday Evening. Their five game winning streaks, in all competitions, were brought to an end last weekend, when they fell to a 6-19 loss at the RDS against Leinster. A loss which saw them slip out of the top four places in the RaboDirect Pro12 table. The only defeat that the Ulstermen have suffered at Ravenhill since last February, in any tournament, was by the narrowest of margins, 12-13 against Glasgow on 13 September, in the PRO12. Munster continue to top the table, with just one defeat all season in the PRO12, a surprise 19-29 loss to the Italians of Treviso, away from home on 20 September.

While Munster is extremely difficult to beat on their own turf, they are currently on a run that has seen them win their last four away matches in all competitions. The last time that they suffered defeat on their travels was in Edinburgh when they lost a Heineken Cup tie by 23-29 in mid-October. Ravenhill is not the luckiest of grounds for Munster, with their only win there since 2007, coming in late October 2010, when they succeeded by 16-6.
