Zebre                          Dragons
Saturday 7th May 14:00 GMT

A match between the side propping up the RaboDirect PRO12 table, and the side in tenth position in the final round of the regular season, would not normally be expected to set the pulses racing. However, on Saturday, there will be plenty at stake when the bottom side, Parma based Zebre from Italy play host at the Stadio Lanfranchi to the Newport Gwent Dragons. For the Welsh Region, there is nothing but pride to play for, as they will finish in tenth position irrespective of the result in Parma. However, for the Italians, there is the carrot of a place in next season's Champions Cup being dangled in front of them.

The Italian side which finishes highest in the Guinness PRO12 table will be awarded the nation's position in that tournament. Until last weekend, Zebre have headed their rivals, Benetton Treviso for nearly the entire campaign, however, Treviso's last gasp win against Connacht, saw the jump a point ahead of Zebre, who were thrashed 10-70 at Glasgow Warriors. With Treviso travelling to Leinster on Saturday, Zebre supporters will feel that victory against the Dragons will be sufficient to see the finish top dogs in Italy. The Dragons will however, be keen to bring an end to the longest losing streak since the side were formed. Last weekend's defeat against the Scarlets at "Judgement Day" was a ninth successive loss in the tournament.

For the first half of the Guinness PRO12 season, it looked as if the Parma based Zebre would finish comfortable above the struggling Benetton Treviso as the leading Italian side in the competition, and with it would come the reward of a place in next season's Champions Cup. However, a run of six successive PRO12 defeats, including two over the Christmas period against Treviso, since Edinburgh were beaten in parma at the end of November, has seen Zebre slip to the foot of the table, where they now trail their Italian rivals by eight points with just seven rounds of fixtures still to play. On Sunday, the Italians host the Newport Gwent Dragons, a side that has nothing but pride to play for in the PRO12, as they are out of the running for a high enough finish in the table for a Champions Cup spot next season.

The Dragons last away match saw them spring a massive surprise, when they defeated Leinster at the RDS, a venue where they hadn't been beaten in over 20 matches. A win in Parma on Sunday, would be the first time that the Dragons had managed successive away victories in the RaboDirect PRO12 since March 2012. The sides have met five times previously, and the Italians have yet to enjoy a win. The closest that they came, was when the teams drew 25-25 in last season's PRO12 meeting in Parma.

Although the qualification process for the new European tournament, that will replace the Heineken Cup next season, has yet to be announced officially, it seems certain that each of the participating nations in the RaboDirect PRO12 competition, will be guaranteed at least one spot. If that process is ratified, then Zebre still have all to play for in the PRO12 competition, as although they sit at the bottom of the table, they are a mere two points behind their Italians rivals Treviso. Although they have won only one of their last five PRO12 matches, against the Cardiff Blues in Parma on 1 March, they face a Newport Gwent Dragons side on Saturday, who has also recorded just one win in their last five matches, a narrow 24-23 win against the Glasgow Warriors in round 15. If Zebre do manage to win on Saturday, it will be the first time that they have managed to record wins in back-to-back home games for the first time in their history.

Although the Dragons have only one away win to their name in the PRO12 since they last visited Zebre last season, a victory in Scotland against Glasgow on 22 November, they have won all three previous games between the two sides, although they only managed to scrape home by the narrowest of margins the last time the sides met at the Stadio XXV April, 14-13.

Sunday, the 24th of February, Zebre and the Dragons play in Parma in the RaboDirect Pro12 at 15:05 local time and 14:05 GMT. Zebre is the very last team on the table right now, having earned just six points so far this season. They have no wins at all. All of the points that they have earned come from bonuses. Edinburgh comes in 10th with four wins as well.
