Zebre are enjoying the best season in the short history of the franchise for the team from Parma in Italy. Prior to last weekend, when they were beaten in the Challenge Cup by current holders, Gloucester, 11-14, they had enjoyed four successive wins in all tournaments. That run saw the Italians finish as runners up in the Pool behind Gloucester, who won six out of six Pool matches in defence of their title, and has seen them climb as high as tenth position in the Guinness PRO12 table.

Tenth might not appear to much of a success, but given that the side has propped up the table in each season that it has competed in the RaboDirect PRO12, this is considerable progress. Having beaten fellow Italians, Benetton Treviso, twice over the Christmas holiday period, on Saturday at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi, they will attempt to win a third successive PRO12 match for the first time ever, when they host Irish Province, Munster.

Munster who are in fifth place in the table, are on a run of nine consecutive wins against Italian opposition in all tournaments, and Munster have won all six of the previous meetings with Zebre, picking up a try-scoring bonus point in five of those wins, while Zebre have only finished close enough on one occasion to pick up a losing bonus point.

Having slipped to the bottom of the RaboDirect PRO12 table, Zebre will be hoping that they can spring a major surprise on Saturday at the Stadio XXV Aprile in Parma, when Munster are the visitors in Round 13 of the tournament. Three successive defeats since they beat Edinburgh 18-10 in Round 9, including successive losses to their fellow countryman Treviso, has seen them slump to last place, and out of the Italian qualifying spot for next season's Champions Cup.

Munster who retained third spot in the table, despite last week's defeat in Galway to Connacht, have won all five of the previous fixtures against the Italian outfit, securing a try-scoring bonus point in four of those victories. However, the Munstermen have managed just one win in their last five games in all competitions, a 28-13 win at Thomond Park on St. Stephen's Day, and the last time that they managed to win away from home was on 21 November at Rodney Parade against the Newport Gwent Dragons.

Zebre's record since the formation of the franchise, against Irish teams is appalling, having played 25 matches against sides from the Emerald Isle, and having lost 24 of them. Their solitary success was against Ulster, in controversial circumstances at the end of last September.

Zebre’s search for their first Pro 12 win continued as they went down 25-16 to Connacht in their season opener. The Italians were the architects of their own downfall, with a terrible botched lineout gifting Connacht prop Nathan White the first try of the game in only the fourth minute. Substitute hooker Andrea Manici scored Zebre’s only try in the dying seconds of the game, with the rest of the points coming from the boot of fly half Luciano Orquera.
