The Italians of Zebre face the Guinness PRO12 's most inform side, when they host the Scarlets of Wales in Round 10 of this season's competition on Saturday at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma. It will be something of a major surprise if the Italians claim victory, as it would be just the second that they have managed in the PRO12 this season, the previous success coming at Edinburgh in Round 7, when they hung on for a 19-14 win. Despite their on field woes, and the fact they have now had two fixtures in the PRO12 postponed due to the weather, Zebre are not rock bottom of the table, as they have a one point advantage over their fellow countrymen from Benetton Treviso, along with two games in hand.
After starting the season with three straight losses, the Scarlets have since embarked on a winning run of six games in the RaboDirect PRO12. Four of which have been on home soil. Of the two away wins that they have registered this season, one came on their previous trip to Italy in Round 5, when they beat Treviso by 22-6. The Scarlets run of success has seen them gradually climb the table, and they now occupy fourth position, with 27 points.

It is a case of bottom against top in the Guinness PRO12 tournament on Sunday in Italy, at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi, when Italian outfit Zebre play host to the Table topping Scarlets from Wales. Zebre have lost both games that they have played this season, against the Blues and the Dragons. Both fixtures were played in Wales, so Sunday will be the first chance for the Italians to play in front of their own fans. The two defeats suffered this season, has extended their losing run to eight games in the RaboDirect PRO12, with the last time that Zebre enjoyed a victory in the tournament, coming back at the Beginning of March, when they defeated the Dragons 23-17 in Parma.
Scarlets top the early season table, with a 100% winning record after two matches. A win on the opening weekend at the reigning Champions, Glasgow Warriors, was followed up with another good win, against Ulster, at Parc y Scarlets. The Welsh Region haven’t topped the PRO12 table since Round 4 in the 2012/13 season. The Welshmen will set a new record for the region on Sunday, if they can complete another victory, as they are currently on a run of six successive wins in the competition, equalling their best previous effort.

Parma based Zebre are rapidly running out of time, if they are going to overhaul their fellow countrymen at the foot of the table, Benetton Treviso. The prize for the Italian side finishing highest in the RaboDirect PRO12 table is a place in next season’s Champions Cup. On Saturday. Zebre host the Scarlets in Round 19 of the tournament at the Stadio Lanfranchi. Scarlets themselves are desperate for victory for much the same reason. The Welsh Region are locked in a three way battle with Connacht and Edinburgh for the last automatic place in the Champions Cup, with the side finishing second highest of the three going into a play-off. Scarlets currently trail their two rivals by three points.
The Welsh outfit will have to win on the road for the first time in over a year, if they want to keep the pressure up on Connacht and Edinburgh. Their last success away from home being back in February 2014, when they managed to defeat another Italian side, Treviso, by 41-33 at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo. Zebre have yet to record their first win against the Scarlets. In five attempts, the closest that they have come is a 16-16 draw in Parma in October 2013.

These two sides return to RaboDirect PRO12 action this Friday night at the Stadio XXV Aprile, after spending the last fortnight staking their claim to Heineken Cup progress. While Scarlets laid down a significant marker in Europe's premier club tournament with a win and a draw, Zebre slipped to two defeats, and are almost certainly out of contention to make it through to the knockout stages. However, the Italians, having failed to win a game in their inaugural season in the PRO12 competition last season, have already posted their first success this year, when they won away from home in round three, at the Cardiff Arms Park, defeating the Blues by 30-25. Scarlets are in good form, and apart from their Heineken successes, they have suffered just one defeat in their last four games, in all competitions. A 12-17 reverse at the hands of Glasgow Warriors, the current league leaders, on 5th October.
Although the Welsh region has won three of their last four games against Italian opponents, they have been defeated on two of their last four visits to Italy. The two games between the sides last season saw Scarlets notch up two wins, and deny the Italians so much as a losing bonus point, although strangely the try count over the course of those two contests, was three tries apiece.
