The 2016 Rugby Championship gets underway on Saturday at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney, with the reigning title holders, Australia, playing host to their great rivals from across the Tasman Sea, the World Champion New Zealand. The Wallabies enjoyed a fine World Cup in late 2015 in England, when they won all their matches en route to the final, before succumbing at the last hurdle to the All Blacks by 17-34. However, in their most recent outings, they were whitewashed on home soil by England as recently as June. The visitors winning all three Test matches, in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Since the Rugby Championship came into existence in 2012, the All Blacks had won all three editions of the tournament, losing just one game in the process, before surrendering their title in 2015 to the Wallabies. Since claiming the World Title at Twickenham, the All Blacks extended their winning run against Wales to 63 years, defeating the visitors 3-0 in June. Although the fewest points they scored against Wales was the 36 they posted in the second fixture in Wellington, the All Blacks looked more vulnerable than they have for some while, conceding over 20 points in each of the first two encounters.

The truncated Rugby Championship, will be decided in a head to head clash on Saturday at Stadium Australia, when the Australian Wallabies, will host their great rivas from across the Tasman Sea, the New Zealand All Blacks. Both teams go into Saturday's clash with two wins each from the matches against Argentina and South Africa. The Australia currently head the standings, courtesy of a slightly better points difference than the All Blacks, following their convincing try-scoring bonus point 34-9 win against the Argentina Pumas in Mendoza in Round 2. In Round 1, the Wallabies had been much less convincing on home soil, when they had to stage a second half fightback against the Springboks, having trailed at one time by 7-21. However, a last gasp score gave them a 24-20 victory.

The All Blacks started their defence of the trophy with a 39-18 win against the Pumas in Christchurch. However, they were stretched to the limit in Johannesburg by the Springboks, in a game played at a frantic pace throughout. A late, and somewhat controversial try by All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw, helped the Kiwis squeeze a 27-20 win. Should the All Blacks win on Saturday, they will clinch a fourth successive Rugby Championship title, having won every tournament since the Pumas joined the previous Tri-Nations competition.

Ewen McKenzie’s first game in charge of the Australian national rugby team sees the Wallabies square off against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in Sydney this weekend. Watch Australia v New Zealand live as it happens by joining watchliverugby.tv today. McKenzie was appointed as coach after Robbie Deans failed to guide the Wallabies to a win over the touring British and Irish Lions. The Reds boss narrowly piped Jake White to the post and many will be hoping that he can wave the same magic wand with the Wallabies that he did with the Queenslanders in their successful 2011 season. New Zealand won all six of their Rugby Championship games last year and will be favorites for this year’s tournament too. However they have a few issues- midfield looks thin in the absence of backup to Nonu and Conrad Smith, skipper Richie McCaw has just come back from a sabbatical and star fly half Dan Carter has been ruled out of this game due to a calf strain.

New Zealand has had the wood over Australia in the last decade and the Bledisloe Cup has been with the All Blacks since 2003, a telling statistic in itself. Last year, the All Blacks won 27-19 in Sydney and followed it up with a 22-0 win at Eden Park. How will McKenzie fare in his first game with the Wallabies? On Saturday, October 20th, the New Zealand Tour and Bledisloe Cup will see Australia and New Zealand play in Brisbane at 20:00 local time and 10:00 GMT. This match is simply a formality because the Kiwis already have the Bledisloe Cup wrapped up this year. The All Blacks finished the Rugby Championship with six wins out of six games played. They won over Australia back to back in the first two matches and that means that the Bledisloe Cup will stay where it is for the tenth year in a row.

Since the beginning of these match-ups back in 1903, New Zealand has won almost all of the contests, taking 117 out of 169 with draws just 5 times. Australia was only able to win 47 times. New Zealand beat Australia first in Sydney and then in Auckland 22-0.

Saturday, August 18th, the Rugby Championship Bledisloe Cup will continue with Australia taking on New Zealand in Sydney at 20:05 local time and 10:05 GMT. The Bledisloe Cup will begin in Saturday, with the All Blacks taking on the Australian Team. Last year, it was the Wallabies who took home the trophy, but as usual, they were not able to make it to the World Cup in October. Instead, it was New Zealand – admitted rivals of Australia – who took home the grand prize in the spot of Rugby. Australia got knocked out by the All Blacks.

New Zealand was able to take out Ireland in a game that ended three to nothing in the tests and it looks good for the team. Sonny Bill Williams is a player you should keep your eye on, since it may be the one of the last times that you can watch him in action.
