Los Pumas of Argentina will plant one foot very firmly in the 2015 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals, if they record the expected victory against Tonga in Leicester on Sunday. Pool C is as expected being dominated by the All blacks, although Argentina did give them a mighty test in their first outing at Wembley Stadium, when only two late scores ensured that the Champions opened their defence with a win. Argentina faced a huge physical test at Kingsholm in Gloucester next up, but eventually came through by 54-9. A score line that really didn’t do justice to the side from eastern Europe.
Tonga have been mightily disappointing so far at the tournament. Having lost to Georgia in Gloucester in their opening fixture, they travelled down the M5 to face African minnows. Namibia. Despite a bonus point victory, the match exposed more defensive frailties amongst the Pacific Islanders, as they conceded three tries to their willing, but limited opponents.
Saturday is a must win game for Tonga to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stage. Given that they still have to play the All Blacks, even an upset win against Los Pumas, may not be enough, given their failure to defeat the Georgians.
