Ireland and Canada open proceedings in Pool D of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, when they come together at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday. The Irish along with France will be clear favourites to qualify from the Pool for the quarter finals, despite some indifferent form in their warm up matches prior to the tournament.
Ireland come into the tournament as the defending 6-Nations Champions, and just a month ago, were looked upon as the most likely Northern Hemisphere winners. However, their warm up results, wins against Wales and Scotland, and defeats to England and at home to Wales, have left many pundits and supporters alike, wondering whether they are true contenders.
Saturday's fixture should allow the Irish side to ease into the tournament, as Canada are unlikely to pose any real threat. The Canucks lost all four games during the Summer in the Pacific Nations tournament, against Japan, Tonga, samoa and the USA. They have played two further fixtures since their arrived in the UK, losing to Fiji, but squeezing past Georgia by 16-15. The teams met in the first World Cup in 1987, when the Irish won in Dunedin by 46-19, and the outcome on Saturday may well be something similar.
