While most of the talk has been about England's elimination from Pool A, the so called Pool of Death at the Rugby World Cup. What has largely been forgotten, is that Fiji were another of the IRBs top 10 ranked side, who were also drawn in the same Pool, and were effectively denied the chance to progress to the quarter-finals, or indeed clinch a third place finish in the Pool, which guarantees an automatic place at the next tournament in Japan in 2019.
The Fijians have lit up the tournament with their attacking flair, and uninhibited approach to the game, and that they have lost all three matches, to England, Australia and Wales, is no disgrace. Nor is it any reflection of the reward that their rugby has deserved. Quite how they managed to score just one try in each of their three defeats is something of a mystery. On Tuesday they will complete their programme against Uruguay in Milton Keynes, and should see them register their first win of the 2015 tournament.
Uruguay have been heavily beaten in both games so far, against Wales and Australia, and still have to face England in Manchester next Saturday. So far they have conceded 19 tries and a total of 119 points. It appears more than likely that the South Sea Islanders will be adding considerably to both of those totals, before they depart the competition.
