The opening match in Pool C of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, takes place at Kingsholm Stadium in Gloucester on Saturday lunchtime, when outsiders Tonga and Georgia, go head to head. While the All Blacks will be expected to dominate the Pool, with Argentina as favourites to fill the second qualifying place, both of Saturday’s sides will fancy their chances of upsetting the Pumas, and a win in the opening encounter, could set them up for a shock quarter-final challenge.
The powerful Tongan’s have never made it into the last eight, but in New Zealand four years ago they came mighty close, beating France and Japan in the Pool, while losing to the All Blacks and Canada. A recent 21-16 in Bucharest against Romania, follows on a Pacific Nations Cup campaign, in which they won three of their four matches, but were beaten by Fiji 22-30 in what was undoubtedly their most difficult fixture.
The Georgians have lost three warm up matches since arriving in the UK. Japan and Canada have beaten them 13-10 and 16-15 respectively, while they also went down to Aviva Premiership outfit, the Newcastle Falcons, by 7-27. A powerful team themselves, with plenty of players who ply their trade around the leagues of Europe, they will provide difficult opposition whoever they face, but may just lack the experience to take down the Tongans.
