Japan who produced probably the greatest upset in Rugby World Cup history, when they defeated the Springboks in their opening game in Brighton, were brought down to earth when they had to face Scotland after a mere four day turnaround. However, after more than a week since that loss, they face Samoa in Milton Keynes on Saturday, in a game vital to both sides.
Samoa, like the Japanese, have won and lost a fixture. In their case, an unconvincing performance against the USA brought a 25-16 win, which was followed at Villa Park in Birmingham by a thumping 6-46 defeat against a re-juvenated South African side. Scotland currently head this ultra-competitive Pool, having recorded bonus point wins in their opening encounters. However, with games against Samoa and South Africa still to come for the Scots, it still appears that both qualifying places from the qualifying Pool are up for grabs.
The winners of the Japan against Samoa clash will certainly be in the mix, come the final round of fixtures, with three wins likely to be needed as a minimum requirement to get out of this Pool. Although with bonus points likely to play a role in who finishes in the top two, both sides will also want to supplement a win with at least four tries on Saturday.
