After two weeks of competition at the 2015 World Cup, the Pool stages are beginning to take shape, and the hopes and ambitions of all the competing nations are becoming clearer. In Pool C on Tuesday, Tonga and Namibia will meet at Sandy Park in Exeter, with both sides seeking a first win of the competition, after losing their opening contest. Tonga falling to a slightly surprising defeat at Gloucester against the abrasive Georgian Lelos, while Namibia put up a spirited showing at the Olympic Stadium, before going down to the inevitable loss against the reigning World Champion All Blacks.
The defeat to Georgia will have all but ended Tonga’s hopes of squeezing into the knock out phase of the tournament, but they still have the goal of a third place finish in the Pool, which would give them automatic qualification to the 2019 World Cup in Japan. To keep those hopes alive for a while longer at least, they will need to beat the Namibians in Exeter.
After 17 consecutive losses at Rugby World Cup finals tournaments, the game on Tuesday, looks like it might provide the African minnows from Namibia with their best chance to halt that sequence at the current competition. Although a five day turn round, after the bruising encounter with the All Blacks, is hardly the best preparation, and an upset appears extremely unlikely.
