Although the Springboks are clear favourites to head Pool B at the 2015 World Cup, the second qualifying spot is far more open. Scotland will be expected to fill the runners-up berth, but Samoa in particular, and the United States of America who they face in Brighton on Sunday, will both harbour hopes of making an impression at the tournament. The sides met in the Pacific Nations Cup during the Summer, with the powerful Samoans coming out on top by just 21-16.
Having previously progressed to the quarter-finals in 1991 and 1995, the Samoans will hope that they can one better than they did in 2011, and reach the last eight for a third time. In New Zealand in 2011, they defeated both Fiji and Namibia, but were squeezed out by Wales 10-17 and South Africa 5-13.
The USA arrive in England having displayed a mixed bag of results in the lead up to the tournament. Apart from losing to Samoa at the Pacific Nations, they also lost to Tonga, but registered victories over Japan and Canada. They have sub sequentially beaten Canada again, but lost heavily to Australia in Chicago by 10-47. The teams met previously in the Rugby World Cup in France in 2007, when Samoa again came out on top in a close game, winning 25-21 in St. Etienne.
