Before the 2015 Rugby World Cup began, the Scotland against South Africa match in Newcastle, was viewed as a match that could decide who would finish in first and second place in Pool B. However, thanks to the Springboks opening round loss to the Japanese Cherry Blossoms, and Scotland's two bonus point victories so far, the fixture will certainly define whether the Springboks retain a chance of making the knockout phase of the tournament, and whether Scotland will plant one foot firmly in the last eight.

The Springboks certainly bounced back in style after the shock in Brighton, when they fell to a last gasp defeat to Japan, and on a sun drenched Birmingham afternoon last Saturday, they smashed Samoa by 46-6 and 6-0 tries, in what had been expected to be a highly competitive fixture, and one that could see the Springboks unseated for a second time.

The Scots have scored 10 tries to date in beating Japan by 45-10 and the USA by 39-16. In both cases the scoreline was very close at halftime, before the Scots eased away in the second period. Scotland haven't beaten the South Africans since 2010, when they won 21-17 at Murrayfield. They have suffered four defeats since then, and haven't scored a try in either of the last two, while the Springboks have posted 12, including eight in their 55-6 win in 2014.
