Japan may have become everyone's second favourite team, following their heroic giant killing win against the Springboks on the opening weekend of the 2015 World Cup, but they were put firmly in their place on Wednesday in Gloucester by Scotland, who playing their first Pool B fixture, were triumphant by 45-10.
On Sunday, the Scots campaign takes them into the heart of rugby league country at Elland Road in Leeds, where they will face the USA Eagles. With the Pool thrown wide open by that Japanese win, bonus points could play a massive part in deciding who emerges from Pool B for the quarter-finals. The 6-Nations wooden spoon winners, will be anxious to secure another five point maximum against the Eagles. The Eagles were beaten in their opening contest by Samoa in Brighton, going down by 16-25, despite matching their opponents in the try count 2-2. The United States of America are probably the one side in the Pool who are out of the running for a top two place, although another upset in Leeds, would change all that once more. The teams last met in Houston in 2014, when on their Summer tour, the Scots won by 24-6.
The previous meeting of the pair, was their only World Cup clash to date, which came in Brisbane in 2003, when they Scots scored five tries and won the game by 39-15.
