Italy and Ireland Under 20s go head to head on Friday Evening at the Stadio Enrico Chersoni in Round 2 of the 2017 Six Nations U20 Championship. The Irish youngsters sneaked home in the closest of the matches in Round 1 last weekend, when a late try by Paul Boyle, converted by Johnny McPhillips, who was subsequently awarded the man of the match award, helped them claim a 20-19 victory, after they had trailed 6-13 at the interval. The young Azzuri, who finished 2016 with the wooden spoon, and five defeats from five fixtures, provided the reigning Grand Slam Champions Wales, with a stern test in Round 1, taking the early lead, and only trailing by 5-10 at half-time, before ultimately being defeated 5-27.

Following their best ever performance at the U20 World Championship during the summer in New Zealand, where they defeated the hosts, and went on to finish in fourth position, Ireland Under 20s lost the services of their coach Mike Ruddock, who made the decision to step down. New coach Nigel Carolan has inherited a strong squad of players, and has eight players who appeared in last year's U20s 6-Nations available to him, as well as three additional players who appeared in the Junior World Cup, one of which Nick McCarthy will skipper the team. Italy Under 20s are coached by Italian international legend, Alessandro Troncon, who has handed the captaincy of the young Azzurri to prop Paolo Buonfiglio. The majority of the home side, who won only one game in last season's championship, 32-13 at home to eventual wooden spoonists Scotland, and who conceded more points that their five rivals, come from the Federal Academy that play in the Italian Serie A.

On Friday, the 15th of March, it will be the Italy Under 20s and the Ireland Under 20s teams competing in the Under 20 Six Nations Championship, and the match will be at 19:00 local time and one hour earlier GMT. The Italy Under 20's team is the only team in the competition not to have earned any points so far this season. That's not from lack of trying of course. They have played four games so far this season, but have not been able to win any of them. France is above them on the table, having won a single game and earning two points from it.
