Two of the sides that were victorious on the opening weekend of the 2017 Six Nations Championship will go head to head in Cardiff on Saturday Evening, when Wales play England in the second fixture of Round 2. For at least one of the teams, their Grand Slam hopes, if not their Championship hopes, will have disappeared by Saturday night. Wales were made to work hard in the first half of their match in Rome against Italy in Round 1, with the Italians actually leading at half-time by 7-3. However, as the match wore on, the Welsh side got well on top of their hosts, and they ran in three tries in the final 20 minutes, eventually claiming victory by 33-7.

England were far from at their best when they entertained France at Twickenham, and yet they still managed to conjure a 19-16 win, in a game in which they trailed for long periods, and made an inordinate number of unforced errors. The defending Grand Slam Champions extended their record winning run to 15 successive games, and will be seeking a fourth successive 6-Nations win against Wales on Saturday. The Last time that the two sides faced each other in Cardiff, the visitors were victorious in 2015 by 21-16.

Wales and England meet in the opening fixture of the 2015 Six Nations Championship on Friday night at the Millennium Stadium, with the venue's roof very much open. For the roof to be closed, both teams have to agree, and after the 30-3 hammering that they took in 2013 under a closed roof, England have decided to avoid allowing the Welsh crowd to create the same hostile and vocal atmosphere that they managed on the previous occasion they went head to head in Cardiff. England's selected match day squad has to a large degree been forced upon them, by the number of injuries that have beset them going into the Championship, with only nine players remaining from the England side that defeated Australia in the Autumn International series.

Dan Cole will make a first international appearance in more than a year at tight-head prop, while Stuart Lancaster has named five players who will be starting their first game in the tournament. Four from Bath; Anthony Watson, Jonathan Joseph, George Ford and Dave Attwood and Saracens George Kruis. For the home team, George North and Richard Hibbard come in on the wing and at hooker, as the two changes from the Wales side that defeated South Africa by 12-6 in the Autumn, while wing forward and skipper Sam Warburton will win his 50th cap.

In the Six Nations this week, Wales and England play at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, March 16th at 17:00 local time and GMT. The Wales team is at number two on the table right now. They have had the opportunity to play four games this season so far, and ended winning three of those games with only one of their games resulting in a loss. That means that they will hold onto their number two spot right now with six points while England comes in at the number one spot with eight points earned so far.
