Although Saturdays contest in Buenos Aires between the Argentina Pumas and the South African Springboks is billed as a World Cup warm up fixture, the outcome of last weeks match in Durban between the same two sides will have added some extra spice to proceedings.
The Pumas shock 37-25 win in the final round of the Rugby Championship, sent shock waves through South African rugby, as they suffered a fourth successive international defeat. The South Africa were beaten by Wales in the last match of their Autumn tour to Europe, and proceeded to lose 20-24 to the Wallabies and 20-27 to the All Blacks in the first two rounds of the Southern Hemisphere tournament.
Given that they led both the games in the Championship going into the final stages, before conceding late scores, the Boks were expected to continue an unbeaten 19-match run against the Pumas. However, with winger Juan Imhoff touching down for three of his team’s four tries, the game was won and lost in the first half, when the visitors opened up a 27-13 lead. The Springboks do have another run of success to defend on Saturday, as they have won nine and drawn one, 16-16 in 2012, of the nine Internationals that they have played in Argentina since 1993. Including the thriller in 2014 when the squeezed home by just 33-31.
