Friday 8th July 07:35 GMT

Super Rugby 2016 reaches the penultimate round of the regular season this weekend, and starts with a fixture on Friday at Eden Park in Auckland, with a clash between the Blues and their visitors from across the Tasman, the Brumbies. Last weekend saw the Blues travel to take on the Hurricanes on the resumption of the tournament after the Summer international break. Their 27-37 defeat finally ended any lingering hopes that the Blues had of making it through to the quarter-finals. The Blues have beaten all three overseas teams that have visited them in 2016. Los Jaguares were defeated 24-16, as were the Sharks 23-18 and the Rebels 36-30.

The Brumbies are themselves locked in a neck and neck battle with the Waratahs at the top of the Australian Conference. The Australian rivals are locked together on 39 points, with the Canberra based Brumbies holding the advantage on points difference only. It appears likely that only one of these sides will progress to the knockout phase of the tournament. The Brumbies made it four wins on the trot last weekend, when they won an Australian derby on home soil against the Reds 43-24. After Friday's trip to Auckland, the Brumbies finish the regular season with a home fixture against the struggling Force.

The Blues and Brumbies take centre stage in the 2015 Super Rugby tournament on Friday, as it is the only Round 9 fixture taking place on the opening day of the weekend. Seven games played and seven games lost, is not the sort of record normally associated with the Auckland based team, such a powerful force in the early days of Super Rugby competition. However, they will perhaps feel that they need just a slice of luck to turn their season around, given that they have picked up five losing bonus points during the course of all those defeats, none of which has been by more than 12 points. Friday's fixture will see the Blues make a welcome return to Eden Park, their spiritual home. They have had only two home matches this season, both of which were played at Albany, where they lost 18-23 to the Chiefs and 10-13 to the touring Lions.

The Brumbies travel across the Tasman on the back of their fifth win of the season in Round 8, when they beat the Cheetahs 20-3 in Canberra, a win that saw them go six points clear at the top of the Australian Conference, although their nearest rivals the Waratahs have a game in hand.

John Kirwan men started off well, but Ryan Crotty charge down try from Chris Noakes’ kick was a killer blow to them, and they never quite got back into the game, despite the best efforts of the fifteen on the park.

The Brumbies have gone off the boil in the last few weeks after a strong start to the season, and were beaten 28-22 by the Tahs in Sydney last week. Flanker George Smith and centre Pat McCabe both picked up injuries in the fixture and neither will travel to Auckland this weekend. Youngster Colby Fainga’a will take over Smith’s No.7 jersey, with Kiwi born loose forward Jordan Smiler providing cover from the bench. The Blues need a victory in this one to remain in contention for a wild card spot, with a tough trip to South Africa still to come for the Aucklanders.
