Round 3 of Super Rugby 2016 kicks off at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday Evening, with an all New Zealand encounter, between the Blues and the Hurricanes. The Blues have begun the season in the ultra competitive New Zealand Conference, where after just two weeks, no side has a 100% winning record, with a 33-31 victory over the reigning Champion Highlanders, before going down to their great rivals, the Crusaders, in Christchurch 13-28.

The only team below the Blues in the Conference at this early stage of the season, are their visitors on Friday, the Canes. Last season's runners up, and top team at the end of the regular season, the Hurricanes, have just a single losing bonus point to their name at the end of two rounds of fixtures. After starting with an embarrassing thrashing in Canberra against the Brumbies, when they went down 10-52, they did at least improve last weekend to push the Chiefs all the way to the wire, before eventually going down by just 16-17. Both games in 2015 went the way of the Canes, who scored four tries in each contest, winning 30-23 in Palmerston North, before completing the double by 29-5 in Auckland.

There would not appear to be much doubt about the outcome of Saturdays New Zealand derby at Eden Park in Auckland, between the Blues and the Hurricanes. The Blues won only their third victory of the season last weekend when they hosted the Bulls. However, all of those wins have come at the spiritual home of the Blues, Eden Park. As well as Saturday's match against the Super Rugby table topping Hurricanes, the Blues have still to face the Crusaders and the Highlanders at home, and although out of the running for a play-off place themselves, they could have a big say in who progresses, The Canes have a massive 13 point lead at the head of the New Zealand Conference, and will look to secure a 12th win of the season in Auckland, to carry them a step closer to ensuring home advantage in the knockout phase of the competition.

Four Kiwi derbies have brought four successes in 2015, including the hard fought 22-18 win against the Chiefs last weekend, although the Canes have not enjoyed a winning margin of more than 7-points in any of those fixtures. They have four more derbies to finish the regular season. When the teams met in Palmerston North back in Round 5 the Canes took the honours by 30-23, and 4-2 tries.

The Blues are the only one of the New Zealand Super Rugby franchises that is already out of the running for a place in the end of season play offs, but they could certainly have a big say in the outcome of the Kiwi Conference, if they can cause an upset on Saturday, and defeat the visiting Hurricanes. The Wellington based Hurricanes might be second in the national conference, and in fifth position on the overall table, but they have played a game more than all of their nearest rivals, and one slip up now, could see their hopes of making the play-offs disappear altogether, with only two games left to play after the international break.

While the Blues have had an indifferent season, with five wins from 12 games played, all of those victories have been at home, along with just a single defeat on home soil. They will, therefore, go into this weekend's game, with a certain amount of confidence based on their form in Eden Park Auckland. The Hurricanes away form hasn't been terribly convincing either. Six games played on the road, have brought just two wins, and it has been their home results that have kept them in touch with the leaders.

This week in Super Rugby, the Blues and the Hurricanes will play in Auckland at 19:35 on Friday, March 23rd. Right now the Highlanders, Stormers and Reds are Super Rugby conference leaders, and the Hurricanes come in at eighth. They have had the opportunity to play four games so far this season and have been able to win two of those games. As for the Blues, they are almost at the bottom of the table. They currently take the fourteenth spot, with only one game won so far this season, out of four played. They have no draws and just five points.
