Round 9 of the 2016 Super Rugby season comes to a close on Sunday, with the Trans-Tasman clash in Canberra between the Brumbies and the Crusaders. The Brumbies have a record of five wins and two losses, following last week's derby win against the Waratahs in Sydney, where the Canberra based side had to battle all the way to secure the four points thanks to a 26-20 victory. The Australians have already hosted two other New Zealand teams in 2016. Thumping last season's Grand Final runners-up in Round 1 by an astonishing 52-10, but being on the end themselves of a crushing result in Round 6, when the Chiefs triumphed by 48-23, running in six tries in the process.

The seven times Super Rugby Champions, the Crusaders, started their campaign with a home defeat in Christchurch against the Chiefs, but have since gone on a run that now stands at six successive victories. Sunday will be only the Crusaders second fixture against Australian opponents in 2016, when they sneaked a 20-19 victory in Pert against the Force. They were more impressive on the road in South Africa, where they recorded a 19-14 win over the Sharks and a 43-37 win against the Lions.

The Brumbies who entertain the seven times Super Rugby Champions, the Crusaders, on Saturday in Canberra, are guaranteed a play-off spot, but are still involved in a neck and neck battle with the Waratahs for the top spot in the Australian Conference. The Brumbies will need to pick up more points against the Crusaders, than the Waratahs manage to gather against the Reds later in the day, if they are to finish top of the Conference, and secure a home semi-final in the play-offs. Should the Canberra based side fail to overhaul the reigning Champions, it seems likely that they will have to head for Newlands, and a match against the Stormers in the first round of the play-offs.

Five of the Brumbies nine wins in 2015 have come on home territory. However, they have lost derby matches to the Waratahs and the Rebels, and so appear more vulnerable at home than is normally the case. Their only home match against New Zealand opposition this season, ended with a convincing 31-18 win against the play-off bound Highlanders. The Crusaders will miss the play-offs for the first time in more than a decade, despite winning 34-11 in Auckland against the Blues last weekend.
