The Hurricanes who suffered a shock defeat in the 2015 Super Rugby Final to the Highlanders, after dominating the regular season, get their 2016 campaign underway on Friday, when they travel across the Tasman to Canberra, where they will face the Brumbies. The Brumbies finished as runners up in the Australian Conference in 2015, with a record of nine wins and seven losses. After beating the Stormers in Cape Town in the play-off eliminator, they fell to Friday's opponents in Wellington in the semi-final.

The Australian outfit lost on all four visits to New Zealand in 2015, three times during the regular season, and then the semi-final. The Canes lost only twice during the regular season in 2015, but fell at the last hurdle 14-21 to the Highlanders, as they sought a first Super Rugby title, when they were the overwhelming favourites.

The Kiwis faced Australian opposition five times in 2015, winning four times, with the only loss coming at home to the Waratahs. Two trips across the Tasman saw them collect bonus point wins against the Force and the Reds. However, it is 2010 since they managed to win in Canberra, when they scored a 23-13 win, although the tries were shared two each.

Scrum half Nic White scored the Brumbies’ only try of the game, with inside centre Christian Lealifiano adding fifteen penalties from the kicking tee. The Australian outfit had an excellent first half in wet weather conditions at Eden Park, leading 14-0 before the Blues mounted a second half comeback.

The Canes come into this game on the back of a bye. They lost a tight game at home 12-17 to the Chiefs in Wellington the week before. Their chances of a playoff spot are as good as over, but if they beat the Brumbies and the Saders and the Blues both lose their respective games, then they’ll be back in with a shout. The Canes currently have 38 points, while the Crusaders and Blues both have 42 to their name. The Brumbies have a five point advantage over the Reds in the Australian conference.
