The Brumbies face the Reds in an Australian derby on Friday at the GIO Stadium in Canberra, as Super Rugby 2016 restarts, after the three week break to accommodate the Summer internationals. With the slenderest of leads in the national Conference over the Waratahs, with just three weeks of the regular season remaining, the Brumbies will expect to secure a victory against the lowly Reds, and will be hoping that they can collect the additional bonus point. The Canberra outfit have won eight matches in 2016, including their last three before the International break, but lead the Waratahs only on points difference.

The Brumbies have won four of the six games that they have played on home soil, with the two defeats coming against Kiwi opposition, the Chiefs and the Crusaders. Four Australian derbies in 2016 have all brought victories, although they have failed to collect a bonus point in any of those successes. The Reds have managed just three wins and a draw to set alongside eight losses this season, A record that leaves them as just the fourth best Australian side, and with no chance of qualifying for the knockout phase of the tournament. When the two sides last met in Canberra in 2015, the Brumbies scored 6-0 tries and registered a 47-3 victory.

For the Brumbies the 2014 Super Rugby season promised much, but ultimately delivered little, as they were eliminated at the semi-final stage of the post-season play-offs. On Friday they open their 2015 campaign with an Australian derby at the GIO Stadium in Canberra, against the 2011 Champions, the Brisbane based Reds. A franchise that had a dramatic fall from grace over the course of the 2014 Super Rugby regular season. While the Brumbies managed to finish in fourth position on the overall table, despite winning just three of their last seven fixtures, the Reds finished in thirteenth position, with just five wins to their credit through the whole of the season. The Brumbies went on to defeat the winners of the 2012 and 2013 tournaments, the Chiefs, by 32-30. However, in the semi-final, they were no match for the eventual Champions the Waratahs, and were beaten by 26-8.

The Reds will have been encouraged by last week's performance in a pre-season run out against the Crusaders, they ran out 35-12 winners. A welcome boost have been defeated the previous week in Cairns by the Rebels, who last season finished at the bottom of the Super Rugby pile.

While the Brumbies coaching staff may have had a shuffle around since they last faced the Reds in Super Rugby, which was last April in Brisbane, in a match that finished 19-19, there won't be too much change expected in the way that the Brumbies will go about their business in the new season. Head coach, Jake White, may have moved on to the Sharks, but stepping into his shoes are his assistants, Stephen Larkham and Laurie Fisher, which should ensure that the work started by White, will be continued. The Queensland Reds have also had a change in their coaching set up. Ewen McKenzie has of course taken up the reins with the national team, allowing Richard Graham to take full control of the team. The last five matches between the teams, has resulted in two wins each (one home and one away), with that draw in Brisbane last April, ensuring that the spoils have been equally shared.

The two teams have met a total of 22 times in their history, since 1996, with the Brumbies very much in the ascendancy during that time, with 17 wins to the Reds 4, and at one time, the Brumbies went 11 years without losing to the Reds, between 1999-2010.
