The favourites for the Australian Conference in Super Rugby 2016, clash at the GIO Stadium in Canberra on Friday in Round 2 of this season's tournament, with the Brumbies hosting the Waratahs. The Brumbies opened their Campaign last weekend with a thumping home win against last season's runners up, the Hurricanes. The Waratahs opened their super rugby season with another Australian derby, claiming a comfortably win against the Reds by 30-10 in Sydney. Having led by 20-0 at half-time, the Waratahs will have been disappointed by the way in which they appeared to slacken off in the second period. A 4-1 try count, did however, secure them the extra point. The Waratahs completed a season's double against the Brumbies in 2015. The match in Canberra was a close run affair, that they won by just 13-10, with both sides managing one try. The Sydneysiders have now won five of the last six contests against the Brumbies at any venue. The Brumbies last win coming in Canberra in 2014 by 28-23.

It will not quite be a season defining fixture in Canberra on Friday, when the Brumbies host the Waratahs in an Australian Super Rugby derby, but the outcome will be very crucial in the final standings of the Australian Conference. The Brumbies who have played a game more than the reigning Champions, the Waratahs, have a four point advantage going into Friday's contest. A 31-18 home win against the Highlanders, which featured four first half tries for the hosts, enabled the Brumbies to rise to third overall in the table. A welcome return to winning ways on home soil, having stumbled to a shock loss in their previous run out on their own ground, when the Rebels emerged with a 13-8 success.

The sides have already met in this season's tournament, back in Round 6, when they Waratahs enjoyed a 28-13 win against their visitors, outscoring the Brumbies by 3-1 tries. The Waratahs have only ever managed to win two Super Rugby matches in Canberra, the most recent occasion being in 2011, while they have suffered nine defeats. Lasts season, the two regular season games were won by the home side, the Tahs then went on to win a Sydney semi-final 28-6.

The Brumbies will be looking to defeat the Waratahs in Canberra Stadium this Saturday, and in the process, leapfrog them to the top of the Australian conference. The Waratahs have posted two try-scoring bonus point wins this season, to put them ahead of the Brumbies, who have won 2 and lost 1 game in Super Rugby 2014, but have secured just a single bonus point, to leave them just behind their neighbors from New South Wales. Last weekend saw the Brumbies beat the Hurricanes in Wellington, and the Director of Rugby, Laurie Fisher, has named an unchanged starting XV, for the all Australian clash. Fisher makes just one change to his bench from last week, with Michael Dowsett coming in for Conrad Hoffmann, as the replacement scrum half  as back up scrum half to Nic White. If he makes his way onto the field, the explosive Dowsett will be making his Brumbies and Super Rugby debut. The match will also see Henry Speight reach a significant milestone, as he will appear in his 50th Brumbies and Super Rugby match. Speight joined the franchise from Waikato in 2011, and has been a regular try scorer ever since. Indeed, he topped the try scoring list in Australia in both 2012 and 2013.

The last fixture between the two teams in Canberra saw the home side pose a comfortable win by 35-6, and the visitors have to go back to 2011 for their last success on Brumbies soil.
