The two sides topping the African Conferences in Super Rugby 2016, the Bulls and the Lions meet in Round 14 of this season's competition at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday. The Bulls top Africa Conference 1 on points difference only from the Stormers, who they defeated at Loftus last weekend by 17-13. That win came after the Bulls had suffered successive defeats on their tour of Australia against the Brumbies and the Waratahs. So far in 2016, the Bulls have played five South African derbies, winning three, drawing one and losing just once. That solitary reverse came in the opening round of the tournament away to the Stormers.

The Lions have the best record of all the competing South African sides in 2016, with eight wins to their credit. All three of their losses have come against New Zealand opposition. Four fixtures against their fellow countrymen have all resulted in Lions victories. The Stormers and the Cheetahs have been beaten on home soil in Johannesburg, with away wins being registered against the Sharks and the Kings. Going into the last round of matches before the International break, the Lions have a two points lead over the Sharks, who have played a game more, in their Conference.

Second in the South African Conference plays third on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, with the Bulls hosting the Lions. The Bulls had topped their national Conference until last weekend when they were defeated in an enthralling contest against the Stormers at Newlands by 13-15, allowing the victors to leapfrog to the top of the ladder. The Bulls still retain a top six place on the overall table despite that result. Saturday is a vital fixture for the Bulls, as they follow it with a bye in Round 13, and then go on their overseas tour, where they have to face; the Blues, Chiefs, Brumbies and Rebels. They do at least finish the regular season on home territory against the Cheetahs. The Lions claimed a fifth successive win last weekend, when they overcame the Cheetahs 34-29 at Ellis Park. Meaning that all six of their wins this season have been by five points or less. The Lions only derby on the road this season up to now, ended in defeat. by 12-29 at the Sharks back in Round 2.

The Lions picked up just one serious injury problem during last weekend's thumping home victory by 34-10 over the Stormers, their second win in two weeks at their Ellis Park home. Vice-captain, Derick Minnie, suffered a fractured cheekbone when he was in a collision with Schalk Burger. While the Lions medical staff remain upbeat that Minnie will make a rapid recovery, they have revealed that loose forward Willie Britz is available for selection this weekend's clash with the Bulls, having overcome an hip flexor injury. The Bulls having lost their opening two games of the season, including a first ever Super Rugby loss to the Cheetahs last weekend, make four changes to their side for the match against the Lions at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday. The 29 year old, Jacques-Louis Potgieter will make his first start at fly-half for the Bulls since May 2010, coming in for Louis Fouche, who drops out of the match day 23 altogether.

Bulls coach, Frans Ludeke has also selected Victor Matfield to start the game in the No. 5 shirt, and moved Grant Hattingh from lock to the middle of the back row, replacing Jacques Engelbrecht. The other change from the side beaten 15-9 by the Cheetahs, sees Frik Kirsten brought into the starting XV from the bench, in a swap with Werner Kruger, who will begin the game on the bench.
