The Bulls and Stormers who meet at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria in their opening Super Rugby fixture of 2014, were amongst the also rans last season, as the Sharks were the only South African team to make it through to the post-season play-offs. Although they finished in second and third place respectively in the Conference, that was only good enough to see them occupy ninth and eleventh place on the overall table.

The Bulls will be looking to make a sustained challenge this season, as they seek to improve further on their record of being the only South African team to win Super Rugby. Three Super 14 titles in four seasons between 2007-2010, remaining the highlight for the teams from the Rainbow Nation.

The Bulls will be led on Saturday by Springbok legend, Victor Matfield, who is looking for his side to play an expansive game, and win matches by scoring tries, rather than choke the life out of the opposition's game, as in previous campaigns. Pierre Spies, who has spent nearly two years on the sidelines, will play off of the bench, with Arno Botha starting at the back of the scrum. Botha himself is only just returning from a long lay-off, last appearing for the Bulls in 2013.

An all South African Super Rugby match takes place in Loftus Versfeld Stadium Pretoria on Saturday when the Bulls host the Stormers. The Bulls have had the much better season of the two sides, having played 11 games, and recording four wins and a draw, which leaves them second in the South African Conference, two points outside the wildcard play-off positions. However, all four of their victories have been on home soil in Pretoria, so the chances of the side making the play-offs would appear to be quite remote, unless they suddenly find a massive improvement in their away form.

The only home match that they have failed to win at home was when they drew an extraordinary match against the reigning Champions the Chiefs 34-34. Saturday's opponents the Stormers are having a tough time, with just three wins from 10 matches played, and two of those victories were by just a single point, while the other victory was 18-3 against the lowly Lions. The Stormers have played six matches away from home his season, and have lost on each occasion. That record seems unlikely to improve this coming weekend.

Both sides managed to win last weekend, though they paid a heavy price. The Stormers have been heavily hit by injuries, and they will be without their captain Jean de Villiers and a number of other star players for the trip to Pretoria. The Bulls have made just one change to their side that beat the Cheetahs last week, and with a bye in the next round, they can go flat out against the Stormers, with the prospect of a week's rest to come.
