The Cheetahs and the Lions face each other in a South African derby at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday, in Round 1 of the 2017 Super Rugby Tournament. The Cheetahs managed just four wins in finishing 14th on the overall ladder during the 2016 season, but everyone of those victories was against teams that finished in the bottom three at the end of the campaign, the Sunwolves twice, the Perth based Force and fellow South African outfit the Kings. In derby fixtures, the Cheetahs won just one of the three games in Bloem, against the Kings, while the Stormers and the Bulls visited and recorded victories.
The Lions were the best side in South Africa in 2016 by a country mile, and won all seven of their South African derby fixtures, as they went all the way to the Grand Final, before losing to the Hurricanes in Wellington. The Lions would have been top seeded in the knockout phase, and hosted the final if they hadn't lost their last regular season fixture in Argentina against Los Jaguares. The Lions have won all of the last five matches against the Cheetahs at all venues, since they were beaten in Welkom 5-26 in 2012.

The Cheetahs who suffered a thumping home defeat to the touring Highlanders last weekend in Bloemfontein by 24-45, have home advantage again this weekend, when they play another South African outfit, the Lions. The Cheetahs are in last place in the South African Conference and have no chance of progressing to the knockout stages of Super Rugby 2015. However, prior to the defeat by the Highlanders, their previous fixture in Bloem had seen the Cheetahs shock the Stormers 25-17, although that was only a second home win of the campaign. Their other success was in Round 4 when they beat the Blues by 25-24.
The Lions who are battling bravely to stay in touch with the Bulls and Stormers in the hunt for the valued play-off positions, suffered a setback last weekend when they were beaten by the visiting Brumbies 20-30. The Lions have only won 50% of their derbies this season, and all of those have been on home turf, although they ran the Bulls extremely close, eventually going down by just 33-35 at Loftus Versfeld. The two sides have clashed six times in Super Rugby in Bloem, with each team winning three times. The last three games at any venue have all gone the way of the Lions, including a 34-29 win in Johannesburg in Round 11.

As the Super Rugby season begins this Saturday with two fixtures in South Africa, the Cheetahs' coach, Naka Drotske, has been able to name a full strength side to open his team's 2014 campaign, which starts with a clash against the Lions in Bloemfontein. After being out of the side for some considerable time, as the result of a knee ligament injury sustained while playing against the Waratahs early last season, the Springbok fly-half, Johan Goosen, makes a welcome return to the Cheetahs' line up.
New recruit from the Bulls, centre Francois Venter, is named in the starting line up, as is prop Caylib Oosthuizen, who starts the match ahead of Springbok prop Trevor Nyakane, who will take a place on the bench. Though Drotske has stated that Nyakane will definitely be used as a second half impact player, and that he had lost out to Oosthuizen, as the latter had performed better in the team's two pre-season warm up matches. The Lions have suffered two injuries in their warm up match against the Kings last weekend. Full-back Andries Coetzee will be out of the side for the next six weeks, due to a knee injury, while lock Rudi Mathee has been ruled out for even longer, approximately eight weeks after sustaining a fractured arm in the game. There was some encouraging news for the Johannesburg franchise however, when it was reported that Elton Jantjies, Anthony Volmink and Ruan Dreyer were all making excellent progress, as they bid to recover from shoulder injuries, and all three are expected to return to action within the next three weeks.

On Saturday, the 7th of April, we will see the Cheetahs face the Lions in Super Rugby. This match is in Welkom and it happens at 15:00 local time and 13:00 GMT. We find the Cheetahs in fourth place in the Super Rugby South African Conference table. They have only taken two wins so far this season, and that earns them twelve points thus far, without any draws. The Lions are also part of the South African Conference right now, but come in at dead last with only ten points. They have won just a single game out of the five that they have played so far this season.
