After a break for the Summer internationals, Super Rugby returns on Friday, with a New Zealand derby between the Chiefs and the Crusaders. The game is being played at the ANZ National Stadium in Suva, Fiji. The Chiefs record of nine wins from their 12 fixtures is good enough to place them second in the New Zealand Conference, three points behind their visitors as the tournament goes into its last three weeks of regular season fixtures. While they are hot on the heels of the seven times Champions, they are also only just ahead of the Hurricanes and the Highlanders, who they lead by two and four points respectively.

The Chiefs won eight of their first nine fixtures, including a 27-21 success against the Crusaders in Christchurch back in Round 1, but suffered two defeats in the last three games they played before the break, at home to the Highlanders and away to the Waratahs. The Crusaders top the overall table, and their 10 wins so far, is more than any other side in the tournament. The two defeats that they have suffered, have both come to New Zealand sides. The reverse against the Chiefs in Round 1 and also a 26-34 loss to the reigning Champions, the Highlanders, in Dunedin in Round 12.

Hamilton hosts a potentially explosive clash of two of the heavyweights of Super Rugby, when the Chiefs, Champions in 2012 and 2013, host the seven times Super Rugby Champions the Crusaders. The Chiefs having lost their title in the qualifier last year against the Brumbies, are one of only three sides that has two victories to their name after two rounds of competition in 2015. A hard fought win in Albany against the Blues by 23-18 was followed up by a home win in New Plymouth against the Brumbies by 19-17. On Saturday they return to their more regular home in Hamilton, where they won five out of six games in Super Rugby 2014. Their only defeat at the Waikato Stadium being against the Crusaders who sneaked home by 18-17, although the home side scored the game's only try.

Defending Super Rugby champions the Chiefs, who head the New Zealand Conference, play host in Waikato Stadium, Hamilton this Saturday to the third placed Kiwi side, the Crusaders. The Chiefs have held the upper hand in recent clashes between the sides, having won four of the last five contests, including a narrow 10-8 success in round two of this season's tournament, in Christchurch. It was quite a surprise that the Chiefs went through their tour to South Africa without recording a victory, although by the same token, they were also unbeaten.

The Crusaders also managed an unbeaten trip to the Republic, but recorded wins in their two matches, as against the Chiefs two draws. The Christchurch based outfit has now won three of their last four Super Rugby outings, as against Saturday's opponent’s record of just one win from their last four games. The visitors have made three changes to the side that beat the Cheetahs last week. Jordan Taufua makes a first start of the season at No.6, with Tom Taylor also moving from the bench to start at centre this week. Owen Franks and Nepo Laulala swop places, with Franks in the starting XV, and Laulala on the bench. The Chiefs stick to their rotation policy, and make six changes to their team from the last game.

The two teams met in the semis last year in Hamilton, with the Chiefs beating the Cantabrians and eventually clinching their maiden Super Rugby crown by beating the Sharks at home. If they do beat the Saders this weekend, the Chiefs will be odds on favourites for their second straight title, with either of the Bulls of the Brumbies having to make a long trip eastward for the final. The Crusaders were clinical in their 38-9 demolition of Ewen McKenzie’s Reds in their playoff quarterfinal in Christchurch. The Saders forwards bullied the Queenslanders into submission and their backs- Israel Dagg and Ryan Crotty in particular, were in sublime form.

The Chiefs topped the log this year in Super Rugby but the Saders have been in better form and thrashed the men from Waikato 43-15 earlier this month. However the Chiefs were without the influential Liam Messam that day, and the All Black flanker makes a huge difference to their pack when on the park. Will the Chiefs book a home final?
