What looks like the match of the round in the 2016 Super Rugby tournament takes place on Saturday at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, when the current table toppers, the Chiefs, face the reigning Champions the Highlanders, in the only Kiwi derby of the weekend. The Chiefs edged a thrilling contest in New Plymouth last weekend against the touring Sharks by 24-22, to give them their eighth victory from nine games this season, and help to cement their place at the head of the overall table.

So far in 2016 the Chiefs have played three local derbies and won them all. Although none of the three fixtures have ended in runaway successes. The Crusaders were beaten 27-21 in Christchurch in Round 1, while the Blues were defeated 29-23 in Hamilton in Round 7 and the Hurricanes 28-27 in Wellington. The Highlanders are holding on to a wild card place at present, with a record of six wins and three defeats, following last weekend's 23-10 victory against the Brumbies in Invercargill. Two New Zealand derbies this season have brought a 31-33 loss against the Blues in Auckland in Round 1, before the Hurricanes were beaten in a rerun of last season's Grand Final by 17-16 in Dunedin.

The Chiefs have a chance to jump to jump to the top of the overall Super Rugby table on Friday when they meet the Highlanders at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton. After just three rounds of action in the 2015 Super Rugby tournament, there are only four teams remaining that can boast of a 100% winning record. However, they trail their New Zealand Conference rivals the Hurricanes on points difference, but with the Canes having a bye this weekend, the 2012 and 2013 title winners have a chance to steal a march on their fellow countrymen. The Chiefs looked back to their awesome best last weekend, when they demolished the seven times Super Rugby Champions, and last season's runners-up, the Crusaders by 40-16 in Hamilton, scoring five tries for a bonus point into the bargain. Friday's opponents the Highlanders registered their first win of the season last weekend, beating the Brisbane based Reds 20-13 in Dunedin, after losing their opening game, also at home, to the Crusaders by 20-26.

Of the last eight games between the two sides on the Chiefs home soil, the visiting Highlanders have managed to win just once. In 2012 they were 23-19 victors in Hamilton, though they ran their hosts close last season, going down just 19-21, although outscored by 3 tries to 1.

The Chiefs are only one match into the defence of the Super Rugby title, and already the strength in depth of their squad is being put to the test, having picked up a number of injuries during the bruising 18-10 win against the Crusaders in Christchurch in round 1. Although the title holders picked up the victory last weekend, at a venue where very few sides taste success, they have paid a heavy price, as forwards, Ben Afeaki, Brodie Retalick, Kane Thompson, Tevita Koloamatangi, along with the returning former All Blacks fullback Mils Muliaina, all having to leave the field with injuries during the match. The Chiefs injury list was already extensive, before those additions to it. With among the players unavailable due to various fitness issues being; loose-forwards Sam Cane, Tanerau Latimer, as well as Liam Squire, while among the backs, Gareth Anscombe, Bundee Aki, Robbie Robinson, and halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow who was a late withdrawal from the Crusaders match, all being unavailable for selection.

The situation was so dire last weekend, that their replacement hooker, Nathan Harris, took the field to make his Super Rugby debut, but found himself filling in at blind-side flanker. Some light at the end of the tunnel is that Latimer is expected to be fit to return to the side against the Highlanders in Hamilton next week.
