The Crusaders will hope that a bye in Round 10 of the 2016 Super Rugby tournament, last weekend, will not interrupt the momentum that they had built up from a run of seven successive victories. On Friday, the seven times champions, face the struggling Reds at the AMI Stadium in Christchurch, seeking an eighth straight win, since they were defeated on the opening weekend of the campaign by the Chiefs, who currently head the overall table. The Crusaders have already faced Australian opposition twice this season, both away from home. In Perth they sneaked past the Force by just 20-19, but a fortnight ago they crushed the Brumbies in Canberra by 44-14, scoring six tries.

Victory by 30-17 in Brisbane over the touring Cheetahs last weekend, gave the Queensland Reds just their second win of 2016. However, a trip to Christchurch is not one that the Australian side ever relishes, having only won once away to the Crusaders, and that was in the last century, back in 1999. The Reds away form in 2016 won't offer much in the way of encouragement, as they have played four times away from Brisbane, and been beaten on each occasion. The only point that they have managed to secure from those fixtures was at the Rebels in Round 3, when they went down 23-25.

The Crusaders face the Queensland Reds on Friday in the latest round of Super Rugby, knowing that defeat will all but end their hopes of making it through to the knockout phase of the tournament. Should they miss out, it will be the first time since 2001, that the seven times Champions have failed to make it through to the post-season phase. Although they produced probably their best performance of the season last weekend. the Crusaders still went down to the table topping Hurricanes by 23-29, and sit in ninth position in the overall table. The Reds have had a poor season by any estimation, and after a bye in Round 12, they have only the Force below them in the table. They have enjoyed just two victories this season, at home against the Force and on the road against the Cheetahs.

The teams have met on nine occasions in Christchurch, with the home side winning eight of those contests, and although the Crusaders were beaten in Round 1 at home by the Rebels, and have only a 50% winning record in Christchurch in 2015, it would be a major shock if the Reds gained a second win on Crusaders soil.

The first playoff quarterfinal of Super Rugby 2013 promises to be a cracker as 2011 finalists the Crusaders and the Reds lock horns in Christchurch this weekend. The Queensland Reds beat the Saders in 2011 for their only Super Rugby crown till date and have not lost to New Zealand opposition this year in Super Rugby. The Queenslanders ground out a 14-12 win over the Waratahs last weekend in Sydney. It wasn’t their best performance, but they got the result they wanted, and that too in the absence of stalwarts like James Horwill and Will Genia. The Saders have built up some impressive steam over the last few weeks and will start favourites at home for this clash. They have won eight of their last nine games in the competition and have scored in excess of 20 points in every fixture. Richie McCaw is likely to be on the bench for the Crusaders and his history with Reds fly half Quade Cooper will be an interesting sub-plot for this clash. The Reds faltered at this stage last season, losing to the Sharks at Suncorp.
