Saturday 21st May 09:45 GMT

The Force host the Blues at the NIB Stadium in Perth on Saturday, in Round 13 of the 2016 Super Rugby tournament. The two sides both sit at the bottom of their National Conferences. The Force are well out of the running for any post regular season action. The Blues, however, will still be clinging to the belief that with a strong finish to the season, that they can yet force themselves into contention for a quarter-final place. After recording just their second win of 2016 in Round 11, when they defeated the Sunwolves in Tokyo by 40-22, the Force had a bye in last weekend's fixture list. Their only previous success this season came back in Round 2, when they overcame the Reds in Brisbane by 22-6.

Five home matches in Perth in 2016 have all ended in defeat. Although they were close to unseating the Crusaders in Round 7, when they were squeezed out by just 19-20. If they are to end that losing sequence on Saturday, they will have to record just a second ever win against the Blues. Their only taste of success against the Blues coming back in 2008 in North Harbour. The Blues had enjoyed a run of three successive victories prior to last weekend, when they found themselves thrashed in Johannesburg by the Lions 5-43, conceding seven tries. The previous week, the Blues had won at the Kings 34-18, which gave them a first away success since they had beaten the Western Force in Perth in Round 17 back in 2014.

Western Force has exceeded all expectations with their performances this Super Rugby season and fined themselves on the brink of the post season play-offs. On Saturday the Blues from Auckland visit the ‘Force Field' (Nib Stadium), in what is a must win game for both teams. Although the Blues are six points adrift of the wild card positions, and need three victories from their remaining three regular season games to have any chance of making the top six teams. The Western Force have already secured six wins on their own soil this season, and with the return of a number of players from injury for the Blues game, they will fancy their chances of recording the win that will continue their run towards the knockout stages.

One factor that has held the Force back this season, has been their inability to score bonus points. Only the lowly Lions have secured less than the four points that the Force have won. However, they have won a game more than the two sides immediately above them, and they will look to their ability to win matches rather than score bonus points to take them into the play-offs. After the three week International break, the Blues have their All Blacks back in their line up, as well as the returning Steven Luatua at blindside flanker.
