Rock bottom Force host the Highlanders in Perth on Saturday, having had a weekend off in the previous Round. While the Force have nothing but pride left to play for, the Highlanders are locked in a bitter struggle to secure a play-off position, and they will hope that a trip to Perth, to play a side that has only two wins to their name in 2015, will assist in their quest.

There is a strange symmetry about the Force's season. They defeated the reigning Champions, the Waratahs in Round 1, and beat them again in their most recent match. In between, they have lost the other 10 fixtures that they have played. The Western Force have already played three matches against Kiwi opposition this season, and have lost all three, and conceded a try-scoring bonus point in doing so.

The Highlanders have won eight of their 12 matches in 2015, and have the third best overall record, behind fellow countrymen, the Hurricanes and the Chiefs. On their previous trip to Australia in the current campaign, the Hurricanes were beaten by the Brumbies in Canberra by 18-31. That loss continued a run that has seen the Highlanders enjoy just one win in their last 15 matches on Australian soil.

After a nightmare tour of South Africa, the Highlanders will look to regroup when they meet fellow strugglers the Force in Perth this weekend. The Highlanders went into their South African tour on the back of a morale boosting win over the Sharks but were back to square one as they slumped to consecutive defeats against the Kings and the Bulls. Some poor goal kicking cost them against the Kings in Port Elizabeth, while the Bulls’ pack was too strong for Jamie Joseph’s men at Loftus.

The Force was very poor against the Sharks. The men from South Africa had lost five on the trot and were ripe for the taking, but Michael Foley’s side were their own worst enemies as they slumped to a 23-13 loss. One of the few positives to emerge from the match for the Force were the performances of flanker Chris Alcock and inside centre Kyle Goodwin, who showed great footwork to score his team’s only try and looks to be a sure bet for the Wallabies’ EOYT.
