The Highlanders and the Chiefs who between them have won three of the last five Super Rugby titles, open their 2017 campaigns with a New Zealand derby at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin on Friday. The 2015 Champions, the Highlanders, were beaten semi-finalists last season, when they lost to the Lions in Johannesburg. The regular season had seen the reigning Champions finish in third spot on the ladder. The Highlanders played three New Zealand derby fixtures in Dunedin last season, and won them all. The only loss they suffered on home soil was against the Sharks, who squeezed home by 14-15, despite playing much of the game with a numerical advantage.

The Chiefs had an identical record to Friday's hosts during the 2016 regular season, and finished fourth overall. After recording a comfortable victory over the Stormers in the first round of the knockout phase, they were beaten at the semi-final stage in Wellington by the eventual Champions, the Hurricanes. The Chiefs won two of their four away derbies in 2016, including a rare win in Christchurch against the Crusaders. However, they were beaten in Dunedin 15-25. A result that extended the Highlanders run of success against Friday's opponents to six straight wins at all venues. The Chiefs last success coming in 2014 in Hamilton by 21-19.

Dunedin will host a New Zealand derby in the last round of the 2016 Super Rugby season on Saturday, when the reigning Champions the Highlanders play host to the Chiefs. Both teams are already assured of places in the post-season play-offs, but their seeding is far from certain, as the four teams from New Zealand that will progress to the knockout phase are covered by just three points going into the final weekend. The Highlanders are currently third in the Kiwi National Conference, but trail the Chiefs by a mere three points, and the Crusaders who host the Hurricanes earlier in the day by just two. Victory in Dunedin therefore, could see them leap to the top of the Conference standings.

The Champions will be glad to be back on home soil, having made trips to Port Elizabeth, where they thrashed the hapless Kings two weeks ago, and then Buenos Aires last weekend to play Los Jaguares, whom they defeated by 34-8. A win for the Chiefs on Saturday would see them secure home advantage in the quarter-finals, and semi-final if they should qualify. If the Lions slip up in Buenos Aires, then a win would see the Chiefs top the overall table, and therefore host the final, should they make it all the way through the knockout stages.

Super Rugby 2015 has  finally reached the knockout stages, and the first of the play-off fixtures sees a New Zealand derby in Dunedin on Saturday, when the Highlanders host the Chiefs, winners of the title in 2012 and 2013. The Highlanders have home advantage at this stage, courtesy of finishing second to the Hurricanes in the New Zealand Conference, and recording 11 wins during the regular season, a record that was only bettered by the table topping Canes. The Highlanders will go into the match as favourites, on the back of this season’s performances. Although they were beaten five times, two of those matches came when they had decided to rest key players, and they have won six of the eight homes matches played in 2015, including a thumping 36-9 win against the visiting Chiefs in Round 16, when they scored 4-0 tries against their rivals. The teams met in Hamilton in Round 4 of this season’s competition, with the Highlanders triumphant on that occasion also, although the result was much tighter, ending 20-17.

The Chiefs themselves finished the regular season with ten wins to their credit, leaving them five points adrift of their hosts. But their end of season form is more of a concern going into the play-offs, with wins in just two of their last six fixtures, both of which came at home, and were against the Bulls and the Reds, both bottom half teams.

Invercargill will see a massively important New Zealand derby on Saturday, when the Highlanders host the Chiefs in Round 16 of Super Rugby 2015. Although the Hurricanes have the national Conference all but tied up, the Chiefs and Highlanders are engaged a ferocious battle for second place, as well as securing a top six finish, and a place in the knockout phase of this season's tournament. The Chiefs currently have the narrowest of leads over their hosts, with 44 points to 43, both teams having played 13 matches so far. Leaving three regular season fixtures still to play. Saturday is the last home match of the season for the Highlanders, as they finish on the road with visits to the Hurricanes and the Blues. One more win should be enough to see the Landers into the play-offs, and having already beaten the Chiefs in Hamilton early this season, they will be hopeful that the required win will arrive on Saturday.

The Chiefs who have the second best overall record, behind that of the Hurricanes, beat the Bulls in Rotorua last weekend, a result that ended a run of two successive losses. If the Chiefs fail to get the win they need on Saturday, they will have further opportunities against the Reds in Brisbane and the Canes in New Plymouth.

With the International break over Super Rugby returns to New Zealand on Friday with a vital derby between the Highlanders and the Chiefs. With only three weeks of the regular season remaining, the race for the play-off positions is hitting up, and every point is vital as the sides seek to extend their season for at least one more game beyond the scheduled 16. All five sides in the New Zealand Conference harbour hopes of making the play-offs, at least through the wild card positions. The Highlanders are currently in fifth place on the overall table, just three points behind the Crusaders, who face a tricky trip the Hurricanes this weekend. A home win on Friday, could well see the Highlanders leap to the top of the Kiwi Conference. However, the Chiefs won't be giving up their title without a fight. Although they are only in fourth position amongst the Kiwi teams, they are just two points outside the wild card places, and a win against the Highlanders would seem them leap above their opponents.

The Chiefs coach, Dave Rennie, has stated that every game for his team from now on, will be like a play-off in itself, and for Friday's match at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, he has named both Augustine Pulu and Robbie Fruean in the side, as he seeks the victory to keep his team in contention, before they face the Hurricanes at home next week.
