The Highlanders will be looking for an improved performance in front of their own supporters on Saturday in Round 2 of the 2017 Super Rugby tournament, when they host the Crusaders at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin. Champions in 2015, the Highlanders went down in their opening fixture in another New Zealand derby, to the Chiefs by 15-25, unable to come back from a 9-14 half-time deficit. Perhaps just as disappointing as the result, was the fact that they were beaten in the try count 0-3 That loss followed a 100% winning record in Dunedin through 2016 in New Zealand derby fixtures, when they won all three clashes against their fellow countrymen, including a 34-26 success against Saturday's opponents.
The Crusaders had a tough opening to their own campaign, but squeezed past the Brumbies in Christchurch by 17-13. In 2016, as well as the defeat in Dunedin, the Crusaders played two other away derbies, beating the Blues in Auckland, and losing at the Chiefs in a match that was moved to Suva. It wasn't all smiles for the Crusaders on the opening weekend however, as they lost fly-half Richie Mo'unga to injury, and could be without him for up to 10 weeks.

The defending Super Rugby Champions, the Highlanders will go head to head with the Crusaders in the opening fixture of Round 12 on Friday in the 2016 edition of the tournament at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in, Dunedin Otago. The fixture promises to be of epic proportions, as the Highlanders come into the match on the back of a stunning 26-13 victory in Hamilton last weekend against the Chiefs, giving them a record of seven wins and three losses in the current campaign. They are now within five points of the Chiefs and the Crusaders.
The Crusaders themselves claimed an eighth victory of 2016 in Round 11, when they hammered the visiting Reds by 38-5 in Christchurch, securing a try-scoring bonus point to give them a five point maximum return. They are now level with the Chiefs at the top of the overall standings with 37 points to their credit. Crusaders who have won the Super Rugby title on seven occasions, have only been beaten once in 2016. That reverse came on home soil back on the opening weekend of the season, when the Chiefs claimed a 27-21 victory. When the sides met in 2015, they each won the away fixture. The Highlanders winning 25-20 in Christchurch, ending a run of six successive head to head wins for the Crusaders.

The Highlanders having had a bye in Round 1 of Super Rugby 2015, start their campaign with a home game at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday, against the seven times champions, the Crusaders. Coach Jamie Joseph has been able to pick his matchday squad from an almost fully fit squad, with just Shane Christie (hamstring) ,Richard Buckman (knee)and Pingi Tala'apitaga (knee) unavailable for selection due to injury. The run on XV will have three players making their debuts; Josh Hohneck, Ross Geldenhuys and Waisake Naholo. While four others sit on the bench hopefully of getting onto the pitch for the first time.
The Crusaders, who were runners-up to the Waratahs in 2014, were stunned in Christchurch in Round 1, sliding to defeat 10-20 against the Melbourne Rebels, who had finished at the foot of the overall table in 2014, with just four wins. The result of that result, is five changes to the team for the clash in Dunedin. Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder brings in All Black Israel Dagg at full back, allowing Colin Slade to move from No.15 to first five to replace Dan Carter who suffered a leg injury in the Rebels defeat.

The New Zealand Conference continues to be the tightest in Super Rugby 2014 with only the Blues out of contention for a post season play off spot. The other franchises, all have hopes and ambitions of not only making the play-offs, but of finishing at the top of the conference, and therefore, having a more advantageous draw when the knockout phase of the competition begins. Saturday's clash in Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin between the Highlanders and the Crusaders will have a huge bearing on those sides chances of progress. Last week, the Highlanders dealt a blow to another Kiwi side, the Hurricanes, who they defeated by 18-16 despite not scoring a try. While the Crusaders slipped up to the table topping Sharks by 25-30, despite the South African team playing for an hour with just 14 men.
While the Chiefs continue to lead the Kiwi Conference with 35 points, those results last week, saw the Highlanders jump to second position with 34 points, while the Crusaders sit on 32, with both sides occupying wild card positions. A Highlanders victory on Saturday wouldn't prove terminal to the Crusaders chances of making the play-offs, but it would make life very difficult for them going into the last crucial weeks of the season.

A crunch game for the Crusaders sees the men from Canterbury travel south to Dunedin to take on the Highlanders this weekend. Watch Highlanders v Crusaders live on your computer by joining watchliverugby.tv today. The Crusaders are very much in the reckoning for the playoffs, tied on points with the fifth place Cheetahs. Their greatest threat comes from fellow NZ side the Blues, who are three points behind and have embarked on a difficult two match tour of South Africa.
The Saders will be wary of the Highlanders, who upset the Blues 38-28 prior to that game. The Otago side was absolutely brilliant in the first half, picking up a four try bonus point as the Blues defense was left clutching straws. The second half was more in favor of the Blues, but the Highlanders had done enough to win by a comfortable 10 point margin. The Highlanders have only beaten the Blues and the Sharks this season, but will be keen to upset the Crusaders at Forsyth Barr. Players like Aaron Smith, Ma’a Nonu and Ben Smith were in very good form for the All Blacks during the recently concluded test series against France and coach Jamie Joseph will be hoping for more of the same from them in club colors.
