The Highlanders who had a bye last weekend in the 2016 Super Rugby tournament, have enjoyed five victories this season, sandwiched between a narrow defeat in Round 1 in Auckland against the Blues, and a narrow and surprising loss in Brisbane against the Reds by 27-28 a fortnight ago in their last outing. On Friday, the Champions will look to get back to winning ways, when they host the touring Sharks from South Africa at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

This will be just the second time that the Highlanders have face South African opposition in 2016. The first contest ended in a comfortable win against the Lions by 34-15. One of only two defeats suffered by the Lions during the current campaign. The Sharks were unbeaten in their first four fixtures, but since losing that record to the Crusaders, they have suffered subsequent losses to the Lions, and the Blues last weekend, in the first of their three game tour to New Zealand. The sides met in Dunedin in 2015, when they Highlanders outscored the visitors by 7-2 tries, on their way to a 48-15 victory. However, the venue has seen Sharks recent success, with wins in both 2013 and 2010.

The Sharks who have had a disappointing Super Rugby campaign, and who find themselves adrift of the play-off positions, begin their overseas tour on Friday with a trip to face the Highlanders in Dunedin. By contrast, the Highlanders are currently holding onto one of the prized top six position, that would see them into the knockout phase of the tournament, if they can maintain if not improve on that standing by the end of the regular season. The Highlanders have lost two of their six home games during the 2015 Super Rugby season, both losses coming at the hands of their fellow countrymen, the Crusaders and the Hurricanes. The only game that the Kiwis have played against South African opposition so far, ended in a 39-21 win in Dunedin. With games to follow on tour against the table topping Hurricanes, and the reigning Champions, the Waratahs when they move onto Australia, the Sharks who are languishing in fourth place in the South African Conference, look odds on top miss out on any post-season action this season.

The Highlanders were beaten in the previous round by the Brumbies in Canberra by 18-31, while the Sharks had a bye. A week off may have been a relief to the Sharks, given that they had suffered three successive defeats prior to their week off.
