The first match on Saturday in Round 12 of the 2016 Super Rugby tournament takes place at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, when the Hurricanes play host to the Brisbane based Queensland Reds. New Zealand sides are dominating the overall points table so far in 2016, with four of their teams having accumulated more points than any of the other competing sides in the first 11 rounds of the tournament. The Hurricanes currently having the fourth based record, trailing the Crusaders and Chiefs by 6 points, and last season's Champions the Highlanders by a mere point.

The Hurricanes are returning from a tour to South Africa, where they enjoyed mixed results. They began with a stunning 50-17 success in Johannesburg against the Lions, but were undone against the Sharks in Durban in Round 11 by 15-32. Last season's Grand Final runners up, have played Australian opponents three times in 2016. In Round 1 they were humbled in Canberra by the Brumbies 10-52, but have since claimed bonus point victories against the Force at home by 41-6 and in Melbourne against the Rebels 38-13. The Reds have played five times away from home this season, and have been beaten on each occasion, including last week when they conceded six tries to the Crusaders in Christchurch, as they went down by 5-38.

Thanks to the Chiefs recent slip ups, the Hurricanes are still in the hunt for a play-off place in this season Super Rugby tournament, at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, from the New Zealand Conference. They are currently in seventh position in the overall table, just a single point behind the Crusaders, who occupy the sixth and final Wild Card position, but they are just four points behind the reigning Champions, the Chiefs, who head the Kiwi Conference. The will be looking to enhance their position when they host the Reds from Queensland on Saturday, as the Australian outfit have been hopelessly out of sorts this season. The Queensland Reds have lost four of their last four Super Rugby contests, and are a distant fourth in the Australian Conference, a lowly position that they are unused to occupying, and which will test their mental strength as much as their ability on the field of play.

Hurricanes did suffer the blow this week of learning that their prop John Schwalger, will miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with blood clots on his lungs. Initially it was thought that he had a chest infection, but after further tests, it was discovered that a more serious problem was present, and the twice capped All Black could be out of rugby for anything up to a year.
