Johannesburg sees the last match of Round 8 of the 2015 Super Rugby season, with a South African derby between the Lions and the Bulls. The Lions set off for their tour to Australasia having lost three successive fixtures at the start of the season, and their supporters must have been fearing the worse by the time they were due to return to the Republic. However, three wins from their four games on the road, has dragged them back into the hunt for honours in the South African Conference.

The Fixture log was admittedly kind to the touring Lions, with matches against the struggling Blues, Rebels and Reds, all of which they won, while their one loss was against the more powerful Crusaders. The Bulls began the 2015 campaign with successive losses, but are now on a run of four successive wins, including last weekend's 31-19 win against the mis-firing Crusaders.

When the teams met at Ellis Park last season, the Lions triumphed by 32-21. A result that ended a run of ten consecutive victories for the Bulls against Saturday's opponents. That loss for the Bulls was part of a run that saw them lose all their away derby matches last season.

The Lions have little to play for except their pride in Ellis Park Johannesburg on Saturday, when they host the Bulls, and the desire to end a sequence of results between the sides, that has seen the Bulls win each of the last ten games between the teams. Both sides have played 13 games in Super Rugby this season, with the Lions winning just four of their games. They return home after a disastrous tour to Australasia where they lost all of their matches. At least they have managed to win three times at home, as against two defeats through the season so far.

However, two of those victories were somewhat controversial. Both the wins against the Reds and Blues were clouded by refereeing controversy. The Lions season could easily have been even worse. Difficult to imagine, of a team that is in 14th position out of 15 sides on the overall table. The Bulls are hanging on to a slim hope of making the play-offs. They have won six games, with a draw and six defeats. But they have yet to record an away win this season.

Although only three points behind the teams occupying the wildcard positions, the Bulls have played a game more than their rivals, and so will be desperate to get an away win on Saturday, to give them a chance of making the knockout phase of the competition, with just two games left to play after the international break.

Super Rugby will see the Lions and the Bulls play in Johannesburg on Saturday the 14th of April. This game will be at 19:10 local time and 17:10 GMT. The Lions are last in the South African Conference by virtue of the fact that they have only Super Rugby been abl eto win a single game out of six played, with no draws so far this season. That gives them an abysmal ten points and last place. The Bulls are the second ranked team in the same conference. They have won four games out of the six that they have played, and have twenty four points right now.
