The Lions are seeking a third victory in the 2016 Super Rugby season, when they play host to fellow countrymen the Cheetahs at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. The Lions will be extremely pleased with their start to the new campaign, given that they have yet to play a game in their own country, yet alone in their own stadium. They opened the season with a trip to Tokyo to face the newly formed Sunwolves, who they defeated by 26-13. After which they travelled on to New Zealand, and caused an upset in Hamilton, where they beat the Chiefs by 36-32. Finishing their tour with a match in Dunedin against the Champions, the Highlanders, which they lost by 15-34.

The Cheetahs, like Saturday's hosts, have also beaten the Sunwolves, squeezing home by 32-31 in Singapore in Round 3. The try count last week was 4-4, the same as when they went down to the other new franchise, Los Jaguares in Bloem in Round 1, a fixture that they lost 33-34. In between those games, they were beaten in a derby by the Stormers 10-20. The Cheetahs lost all 4 away matches against South African teams in 2015, Including a thrilling 29-34 reverse in Johannesburg. The last time the Cheetahs enjoyed a victory over Saturday's opponents, was back in 2012 when the game was played in Welkom, and they won by 26-5.

After having a bye in Round 10 of the 2015 Super Rugby tournament, the Lions return to action on Saturday, seeking a fifth successive win. It will be interesting to see if their week off works in their favour or against them. Prior to last weekend, the Lions had built a find head of momentum, with narrow derby victories in Johannesburg against the Bulls 22-18 and the Sharks 23-21, which followed on a hugely successful tour to Australasia, where they won three of their four fixtures. That run of results has placed the Lions in third position in the South African Conference, going into Saturday’s home fixture with the Cheetahs. All five of the Lions wins in 2015 have been by margins of between 1-4 points, and if they had not lost a tight affair against the Stormers at Ellis Park Stadium early in the season by 19-22, they would be in an even stronger position in the chase for qualification for the knockout phase.

The Cheetahs have had a difficult season, since they shocked the tournament on the opening day when they beat the Sharks in Durban by 35-29, followed up by a narrow home success against the Blues. They had to wait until Round 9 for their next win, when they beat the Forde in Perth.

The two bottom sides in the South African Conference clash in their final fixture of Super Rugby 2014 at Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday as the Lions welcome the Cheetahs. Between them, the two sides have managed just 10 wins from 30 fixtures, in a campaign that has been extremely disappointing from the South African point of view, with only the Sharks presenting any sort of challenge to the teams from Australasia. Johan Ackermann, the Lions head coach, has selected Elton Jantjies to start Saturday's game at fly-half in place of Marnitz Boshoff, who will start the game on the bench. Boshoff had won the first derby of the season with a late drop goal. The forwards remain unchanged from the run on eight who started the 34-17 success against the Rebels last weekend. The Cheetahs start the same XV that sprung a major surprise by beating the Sharks last weekend. Head coach Naka Drotske has also named the same replacements bench as the one in place for the 27-20 success last weekend.
