The Lions gambled on their second string being able to gain the result needed in Buenos Aires last weekend, to secure them the top seeding through the knockout phase of Super Rugby 2016. However, a 22-34 defeat to Los Jaguares, meant that they finished second on the overall table to the Hurricanes, and as a result, instead of facing the Sharks, they face the Crusaders in the quarter-finals at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. Last weekend's reverse was just a fourth defeat of the season for the Lions. Of their 11 victories, six came on home soil. They did, however, suffer two defeats in Johannesburg, one of which was against Saturday's opponents in Round 6, when the Kiwi outfit took the honours, squeezing home by 43-37.

The Crusaders had hopes of top seeding themselves, going into the last round of the regular season. However, a 10-35 reverse on home soil against fellow countrymen the Hurricanes, saw them miss out, and force them onto the road for the quarter-finals, despite a record of 11 wins and four defeats. However, quite apart from their victory in Johannesburg, with was a seventh successive win against the Lions, the Crusaders won four of their other six away matches.

There is the promise of a cracking Super Rugby match up on Friday at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, when the Lions and the touring Crusaders go head to head. The Lions will be playing only their second home match of the season, having easily dealt with the visiting Cheetahs in Round 4 by 39-22. Their third win from four fixtures in the 2016 tournament. Prior to the Cheetahs game, the Lions had begun their campaign with three overseas fixtures. They will have been more than satisfied to return home with two wins under their belt, against the Sunwolves in Tokyo and the Chiefs in Hamilton. The one reverse coming by 15-34 in Dunedin against the Highlanders.

The Crusaders, like their hosts on Friday, have also won three and lost one game this season. Since an unimpressive start to the new season, when they were beaten at home by the Chiefs in Round 1, the Crusaders have steadily improved. Wins against the Blues and the Kings in Christchurch, preceded their departure for South Africa, where they began their tour last weekend by taking the Sharks unbeaten record. Coming out on top by 19-15, a scoreline that flattered the South Africans. In recent meetings between the teams, the Crusaders have claimed fairly comfortable victories. With the Lions having to go back to 2009 to find the last time that they managed to score more than a single try in a game against Friday's opponents.

On Saturday, the 31st of March, the Lions and the Crusaders will be clashing in a head to head match that happens in Johannesburg at 17:05 local time and two hours earlier GMT as part of the Super Rugby competition. The Lions are the 11th team on the Super Rugby table. They have one win out of four games played so far this season, and have lost three for a total of 10 points. That ties them with the Rebels. The Crusaders just barely missed out on being a wildcard team so far. They are in seventh with two wins and two losses out of four games played.
