What looks like the match of the weekend in Round 10 of the 2016 Super Rugby tournament, takes place in Johannesburg on Saturday, when the Lions host last season's Grand Final runners up, the Hurricanes. The Lions steam roiled the Kings In Port Elizabeth last weekend by 45-10, scoring seven tries, as they improved their already impressive record to won six and lost two in 2016. Both losses have come against New Zealand opposition, which may suggest that hopes of a first ever Super Rugby title would be too much to hope for at this stage. The Highlanders dismantled the Lions by 34-15 in Dunedin, while the Crusaders won an absolute thriller in Johannesburg by 43-37. However, the Lions have beaten New Zealand opposition this season, claiming the scalp of the Chiefs in Round 2 by 36-32 in Hamilton, making them the only team this season to have defeated the Chiefs.

The Hurricanes had won successive matches prior to last weekend's thrilling fixture against the Chiefs, that they ultimately lost by 27-28. That result has left them with a record of won five and lost three in 2016. Saturday will be just the second match that the Canes have played against South African opposition this season, with the Kings who were beaten in Wellington 20-42 being the first. The Kiwis have won the last six meetings with the Lions, and 11 of the last 12. They met the Lions on their tour of their Republic in 2015, when they won by 22-8.

The Lions and the Hurricanes, both of whom missed out on the post-season Super Rugby play-offs in 2014, clash at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday, in the opening round of the 2015 campaign. The Hurricanes who missed out on the play-offs to the Highlanders by an agonising solitary bonus point, have named a side that contains a number of their All Blacks for the season opener. New coach Chris Boyd has named both Beauden Barrett and Conrad Smith in his starting XV, although he has had to replace Jeremy Thrush in the second row as the result of a calf injury, Mark Abbott coming into the run on XV.

The Lions Head Coach, Johan Ackermann has selected a 23-man squad that combines youth and experience, as he seeks to improve on last season's fourth place Conference finish, and twelfth on the overall table. With greater playing resources in terms of depth and experience, and with the bonus of a full season of Super Rugby and Currie Cup behind them, the Lions are certainly full of confidence going into the new campaign. With the Lions playing every week for the first nine weeks of the season, the depth of the squad may well be both needed and challenged. The star of the Lions 2014 campaign, Marnitz Boshoff starts in the No.10 shirt and the starting XV bears a very close resemblance to the Currie Cup final team.

On Friday, March 2nd, the Super Rugby competition sees the Lions and the Hurricanes face off in Johannesburg. They will play at 19:10 local time and 17:10 GMT. The Australian Conference is the odd one out in this match-up as the Hurricanes take the fifth spot in the New Zealand Conference after losing one game and earning no points. The South African Conference is where we find the Lions, currently in third. They have also played one game, but won it to earn four points. However, the year has just started for this competition.
