Super Rugby 2017 gets underway on Thursday, with a cross-Tasman match up between the Rebels and the Blues at the AAMI Park, Melbourne. The Rebels finished in twelfth position in the overall table in 2016, with a record of seven wins and eight defeats. However, if they are to improve on that record in the coming campaign under their fully fit skipper Nic Stirzaker, they will need to start beating some of the high flying sides, as well as the strugglers. Last season, they completed season doubles against the Force and the Reds, as well as beating the Cheetahs and the Sunwolves. Their best result was the 21-17 success against the Waratahs in Melbourne.

The Blues were unbeaten against Australian opposition during 2016, while the Rebels lost all five of their fixtures against sides from New Zealand. In the two games that the Blues played on Australian soil, they won in Perth against the Force, and drew in Brisbane against the Reds. Their only other victory on the road came in Port Elizabeth against the Kings. That poor away form helped contribute to the Melbourne Rebels final finishing position of eleventh on the overall ladder, with eight wins and a draw, to set alongside six losses.

The Melbourne Rebels pulled off a stunning win last weekend in beating the Chiefs, putting a severe dent in the Kiwi teams hopes of finishing top of their national Conference, and at the same time also keeping alive their own slim hopes of making it through to the play-offs. On Friday the Rebels will face another team from across the Tasman Sea, the Blues, who have managed only two wins all season, and are already out of the running to extend their season beyond their 16 scheduled fixtures. Five wins and five defeats in 2015 have placed the Melbourne based side in third place in the Australian Conference, seven points behind the reigning Champions the Waratahs and eight adrift of the Brumbies.

The Blues arrive in Australia having enjoyed just a second win of the season last weekend, when they defeated the Force in Auckland by 41-24. However, their record on the road doesn't augur well for Friday. Just one win in their last 22 away games in Super Rugby, and that came at the Force in Round 17 in 2014. With only one of the Rebels matches being decided by more than 12 points this season, and despite their struggles the first nine games that the Blues played all ended in a margin of 12 points or less, a close contest looks in store.
