Melbourne Rebels                          Force
Sunday 29th May 06:05 GMT

The final match in Round 14 of the 2016 Super Rugby tournament, takes place at the AAMI Park in Melbourne on Sunday, and is an Australian derby between the Melbourne Rebels and the Force. Unless the Rebels can make up the 11 point deficit between themselves and the Australian Conference leaders, the Waratahs, over the course of their final four fixtures, then they will not be advancing to the knockout phase of the competition. A run of three successive defeats, including a derby loss to the Brumbies in Melbourne by 22-30, has seen the Rebels dropping out of realistic contention for a quarter-final place. Prior to the Brumbies result, they had won all three of their fixtures against Australian sides in 2016, including a 25-19 success in Perth against Saturday's visitors.

The Western Force are already eliminated from the tournament. Just two wins and 11 points in 2016, sees them at the bottom of the Australian Conference, and in 16th position on the overall ladder. Their two victories came at the Reds in Round 2, and in Tokyo against the Super Rugby debutants the Sunwolves in Round 11. When the two sides met in Melbourne in 2015, the visiting Force squeezed a 13-11 win.

The Rebels and the Western Force meet in an Australian derby on Friday in Melbourne, in the final fixture of Super Rugby 2015 for both sides. The Rebels have managed a credible seven wins and eight defeats during the current campaign, including a thrilling 21-20 success at home against the touring Bulls last weekend. That success against the South Africans brought an end to a run of three successive defeats. Having lost their first three matches in Melbourne, the Melbourne Rebels have since them won four straight matches at home, and will be confident of stretching that run to five wins on Friday, against a Force team that has managed a paltry two wins in 2015. Surprisingly, the two wins that the Force have managed to record have both been against the reigning Super Rugby Champions, the Waratahs. Since winning in Sydney in Round 1, which may have raised false hopes amongst the Force's supporters, they have lost six matches on the road.

The Rebels won the previous meeting between the teams this season, which took place in Perth in Round 5. Although to the Force's credit, the final margin was just four points, as the Rebels held on to register a 21-17 success.

The Melbourne Rebels have managed to record just two victories from their seven Super Rugby matches this season, and sit firmly at the bottom of the Australian Conference. Already trailing the wild card position occupying sides by seven points, the Rebels look a side that will be seeing the season out and making preparations for 2015, rather than challenging for a post season play-off place. Friday's opponents, their Australian rivals the Western Force, are a side in the ascendancy. They are currently second in the Australian Conference, just three points behind the Conference leading Brumbies, but occupying one of the wild card play-off positions. Last week's success against the Waratahs saw the Force make some of their own history. The 28-16 win, was the Perth based side's fifth consecutive win. The first time in the club's history that they have achieved such a feat. Just last season, the Force managed just four victories throughout the whole campaign. So even if they don't manage another win in the season, they will still have had a more successful season than they did in Super Rugby last year.

The Force's Wallaby winger, Nick "The Honey Badger" Cummins scored a hat-trick of tries in the Waratahs match, and became just the third player in the club's history to achieve that personal feat. The others being Cameron Shepherd and Scott Staniforth.
