Queensland Reds                          Natal Sharks
Friday 24th February 09:00 GMT

The Sharks will be the first South African side in action in the 2017 Super Rugby tournament, when they take on the Queensland Reds at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Friday. The Reds who were Champions as recently as 2011 when they defeated the Crusaders in the final, had a woeful 2016, when they won just three games, and drew another. All three of those wins came in Brisbane, with the most notable coming against the reigning Champions at the time, the Highlanders. The other successes in 2016 were against fellow strugglers the Sunwolves and the Cheetahs. The Reds also recorded a draw at home against the Blues. Their miserable record saw them finish in a lowly 15th position in the overall ladder.

The Sharks finished in eighth position in 2016, which saw them qualify for the quarter-finals. However, their finishing position sent them off to Wellington to face top seeds the Hurricanes, where they were duly despatched by 0-41. The Sharks won nine fixtures in 2016, four of which were on the road. Local derbies at the Stormers and Kings, as well as at the reigning Champions the Highlanders and in Argentina against tournament debutants, Los Jaguares. The Natal Sharks weren't scheduled to visit Australia in 2016, but have a good record in the country, where they have won seven of their last 11 visits. They have beaten the Reds on three of the their last five trips to Brisbane.

The Reds and the Natal Sharks meet in Brisbane on Friday, with nothing but pride to play for, with both franchises having had bitterly disappointing Super Rugby campaigns. The Reds produced some of their best rugby of the season last weekend, when they beat the Rebels in an Australian derby by 46-29. Another win on Friday, would be their first back-to-back wins in 2015. The Sharks were beaten by the 2014 Champions, the Waratahs, in Sydney last weekend by 18-33, to fall to a sixth successive defeat. The last time the Sharks enjoyed the taste of victory came back in Round 7, when they beat the Force in Durban in a dire 15-9 contest. Their tour has so far brought three losses, with the Highlanders and the Hurricanes also getting the better of the South African outfit.

The Queensland Reds have only hosted one other South African side in Brisbane this season, when they went down to the Lions 17-18. However, against a team that has been beaten in six of their seven away matches in 2015, the Reds will be hopeful of a fourth win of the campaign. Overall in Brisbane, the Reds lead the Sharks by six wins to two. However, the Sharks wins have come during their last four visits.
