The Queensland Reds who have endured a woeful season play host to the side riding high in second position of the Super Rugby 2016 overall table, the Chiefs, on Friday at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. The Brisbane based side have managed just three wins and a draw, to set alongside nine defeats during the current season. By the time they recorded their first victory of the Campaign, in Round 7, their challenge for a post-season play-off spot, was already effectively over. That victory was a major surprise, as it came against the reigning Champions, the Highlanders by 28-27 in Brisbane.

The Chiefs won their top of the table battle last weekend against the Crusaders by 23-13, in a fixture staged in Suva in Fiji, to move back to the top of the Australasian Conference. That result saw them move a point ahead of the Crusaders, with the Hurricanes and Highlanders two and three points adrift respectively. The Chiefs have been beaten just three times in 2016, with only one of those reverses being on the road, and came in the last match prior to the international break, which was staged in Sydney against the Waratahs. On their other trip to Australia in 2016, the Chiefs recorded a stunning bonus point win against the Brumbies in Canberra by 48-23.

The Queensland Reds have managed just four wins in 2015, but three of those successes have come in their last six fixtures. On Saturday, they welcome the play-off chasing Chiefs to Brisbane. Last weekend saw the Chiefs slip to an 8-36 defeat to the Highlanders, ending any hopes they had of overhauling the Hurricanes for top spot in the New Zealand Conference. However, despite three defeats in their last four matches, a win on Saturday, will clinch a wild card play-off spot for the 2012 and 2013 Champions. For a team with such an impressive record in recent seasons, the Chiefs have a woeful record on Australian soil, where they have lost nine of the last 11 fixtures they have played, including a 15-16 defeat to the Rebels in Melbourne in Round 12.

The Chiefs went down 36-8 to the Highlanders last weekend and they are now four points behind the Landers and 13 behind the Hurricanes whom they can no longer catch. The Chiefs have now lost three of their last four but a playoff place is still pretty much assured. Against Australian opposition this season the Chiefs beat the Brumbies (19-17) and the Force (35-27) in home games but they came unstuck against the Rebels in Melbourne in Round 12 when they were edged out 16-15. Going further back the Chiefs have lost nine of their last 11 on Australian soil.

In Super Rugby this week, the Reds and the Chiefs play in Brisbane at 15:10 local time and 05:10 GMT. It happens on Sunday, May 13th. The Queensland Reds are the second team in the Australian Conference, holding onto their spot with 26 points. However, they could lose it at any time because the Waratahs, who are currently in third, also have twenty six points. The Reds have won five games so far, and had five losses, so no draws yet this season. The Waratahs have had one less win and one more loss than the Reds.
