The Reds and Rebels will meet in their final Super Rugby fixture of 2016 on Friday at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Neither team is in the running to extend their campaign into the post-season play-offs. Following an embarrassing 5-50 thrashing on home soil last weekend by the visiting Chiefs, the Queensland Reds remain stuck on just three victories for the season. All of those wins, against the Highlanders, Cheetahs and Sunwolves, as well as a drawn fixture against the Blues have come in Brisbane. However, both Australian derbies that the Reds have played at home in 2016 have resulted in defeats. The Force 6-22 and the Waratahs 13-15 have been successful on trips to Brisbane. The reds have also lost their three away derbies in 2016.

The Rebels suffered a worst humiliation last weekend than the Reds, as they travelled to Christchurch to face the Crusaders, and were crushed by 26-85, conceding 13 tries. Scoring four of their own was little consolation. That reverse was a fifth loss in the last six games they have played, leaving them with an overall record of six wins and eight defeats. In derbies through 2016 the Melbourne Rebels have managed to win four out of five fixtures. The only defeat coming in Melbourne against the Brumbies in Round 12. They have won away from home against the Force 25-19 and the Waratahs 21-17, while also beating the Reds in their first encounter of the season 25-23 back in round 3.

The Reds host an Australian derby in Brisbane on Friday, when they welcome the Melbourne based Rebels in Round 14 of the 2015 Super Rugby tournament. The Reds have a dreadful campaign, and sit at the very foot of the overall table, having won just twice his season, and lost nine. Their only successes came in Round 2 when they beat the Force 18-6, and in Round 10 when they defeated the Cheetahs by just 18-17 during their South African tour. Since their most recent victory, the Queensland Reds have suffered two heavy defeats, in Brisbane they were beaten 19-35 by the table topping Hurricanes, but slightly more surprising was the crushing 17-58 loss to the struggling Crusaders in Christchurch last weekend.

The Melbourne Rebels will be hoping to continue their good form and keep up their challenge for a play-off spot. They have won four of their last five fixtures, and are in third place in the Australian Conference, just four points behind the leaders, the Brumbies. The only defeat during their recent winning run, came in Sydney, when they went down narrowly to the defending Champions, the Waratahs by just 16-18. The two teams met in Melbourne in Round 8, when the Rebels won by 23-15, only their second ever win against the Reds.

The bottom two sides in the Super Rugby 2014 Australian Conference meet this weekend in Suncorp Stadium Brisbane as the Reds play host to the Rebels from Melbourne. Under normal circumstances, the Reds would be expecting a fairly easy ride against the Rebels, having won all matches between the sides, since the Melbourne franchise was formed and joined Super Rugby in 2011. However, 2014 has been a difficult season for the Queensland Reds, and they have lost the last five matches that they have played, which has left them at the bottom of their national conference, and in 13th position on the overall table. With a record of just three wins from their 11 matches, their position is hardly surprising. At home they started the season with a couple of wins, but have lost the last three games that they have played in Brisbane.

The Melbourne Rebels own season hasn't been any easier than their hosts has. They have also registered just three wins, although they have played a game less than the Reds. The Rebels have played four times on the road this season, and have yet to record a win. The closest that they managed to get to the Reds in their three Super Rugby matches in Brisbane, was in 2012, when they lost by just 6-11. Although the Rebels will have a Super Rugby winner in their starting XV, with Toby Smith at prop, they will be without Japanese internationals, Male Sau and Shota Horie, who are both away with their national side on World Cup duty.

After shock wins over both the Stormers and the Waratahs, the Melbourne Rebels will look to add the Queensland Reds to their list of high profile scalps this season when the two sides meet at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane this weekend. The result could easily have gone the other way had Tahs scrumhalf Brendan McKibbin not missed a late penalty effort.

The Reds’ playoff hopes have been hit after a poor tour of South Africa that saw them lose to both the Cheetahs and the Stormers. Ewen McKenzie’s side seemed to do enough to win both games, but unfortunately, the final touches were lacking. Quade Cooper kicked five penalties against the Stormers in windy conditions in Cape Town and the fly half will again look to provide an assured performance as he tries to make his way into Australia’s squad for the Lions tour.
