There is only a solitary South African derby this weekend in Round 10 of the 2015 Super Rugby tournament. Durban will see the Sharks and Bulls go head to head, in a match vital to the position of the teams in their national conference, where just four points cover the top four teams.

The Sharks will hope to get back to winning ways ahead of their overseas tour which will start after they have a bye in week 11. Last weekend they went down narrowly to the Lions in Johannesburg by 21-23, but in the game before they were humiliated on home soil by the touring Crusaders, who crushed them by 10-52. With tough games on tour against the Highlanders and Hurricanes in New Zealand, and the Waratahs in Australia, and having played a game more than the Bulls and the Stormers, the Sharks who finished top of the conference in 2014, are desperate to beat one of their great rivals this coming Saturday.

Victory against the Reds in Round 9, was a fifth success in six outings for the Bulls. But having played just two games on the road this season, losing to the Lions 18-22 but beating the Cheetahs in Bloem by 39-20, they may be presenting a false position at this stage of the campaign.

The Bulls begin their 2014 Super Rugby campaign on Saturday, with a match against the Sharks at Kings Park in Durban, with the disappointment of last season still weighing heavily upon the franchise. Bulls who had been the most convincing of the Conference winners, finishing nine points ahead of the Cheetahs, had gained an bye to the semi-finals, where they had qualified for a home match, which ultimately was to be against the Brumbies. Perhaps the Bulls expectation was too great, but an upset 23-26 defeat to the Australian team, left the side in a state of shock.

They will have to kick off their new campaign without; Arno Botha, Morne Mellett and Jesse Kriel, who are all sidelined through injury. The worse news to accompany the trio, concerns forward Botha, who it appears likely, will miss the entire season.

The player is due to undergo surgery on his injured ACL, with a predicted recovery time of at least six months. The news to come from the team's medical doctor, Org Strauss, is that Mellett will probably miss two weeks of action, as he struggles to overcome a back injury, while Kriel will be out for an anticipated three weeks, with a contused calf. Although the rest of the squad was declared fit for the season's opener, Deon Stegmann will only train on Wednesday prior to the match against the Sharks, as he is still recovering from a groin strain.

The Sharks had a disastrous tour, losing to the Chiefs, Highlanders and Reds before scratching out a 23-13 win over the Force in Perth. Against the Force, they weren’t at their best, but tries to skipper Keegan Daniel and full back Riaan Viljoen, coupled with some points from the boot of Patrick Lambie, saw them prevail over the error prone West Australian outfit.

The Bulls have built up a healthy lead at the top of the South African conference by virtue of their performances at Loftus and delivered another master class in Pretoria as they demolished the Highlanders. Frans Ludekes side also picked up a bonus point for scoring four tries as they put the men from Otago to the sword. Their performance however dipped a bit in the second half, especially after Jan Serfontein was taken off, and Ludekes will have taken note of that fact. The Sharks had the better of the Bulls in 2012 and can call upon the trio of Bismarck du Plessis, Butch James and Ryan Kankowski, but will be without in form winger JP Pietersen, who picked up a groin injury against the Force.
