The Sharks haven't won either of their last two Super Rugby fixtures, but still head their Conference, and sit in fourth position on the overall ladder, such are the vagaries of the qualification process. On Saturday, the Lions are the visitors to the Growthpoint King's Park in Durban, seeking just a second ever victory at the venue, the only ever previous win coming way back in 2000. The Sharks began their 2016 campaign with three successive wins and a draw, before losing their unbeaten record to the touring Crusaders, who beat them by 14-19 two weeks ago.

The Lions have won three and lost two of their opening five fixtures. A record that is good enough to place them in the African Wild Card position, with 14 points, just two behind this weekend's hosts. The Lions have also fallen to the Crusaders, who beat them by 27-43 last weekend. Their previous reverse in 2016, came on their tour to New Zealand, when they slipped to a loss in Dunedin against the Highlanders. Saturday will be only the second occasion in 2016 that the Lions have faced a fellow South African outfit. That fixture brought the Lions a 39-22 in Johannesburg against the Cheetahs, who have been beaten five times already in the current campaign.

The last Super Rugby match of Round 2 is an all South African affair, with the Sharks hosting the Lions in Durban. Both teams started the 2015 season with defeats on their own soil. The teams have met in Durban on ten previous occasions, with the Sharks emerging victorious in nine of those fixtures. The overall record between the two rivals has seen the Sharks win 15 of the 20 matches between the franchises, with two other games drawn, the Lions registering a mere three wins. The Lions were beaten by the touring Hurricanes in Round 1 by 8-22, and coach Johan Ackermann has made a number of changes for the difficult trip to last season's Conference winners, although to the surprise of many pundits, he has left the back line untouched. As it was the backs inability to turn possession into points against the Hurricanes, this was the area where he was expected to look for improvements.

Jacques van Rooyen replaces Schalk van der Merwe at loosehead prop, van der Merwe dropping to the bench. Derick Minnie comes in for Jaco Kriel who is sidelined with a groin injury, and on the other flank, Warwick Tecklenburg has received a call up. The Lions haven't beaten the Sharks in Durban since 2000, when they squeezed a 28-27 victory.

The top two South African sides in the early stages of Super Rugby 2014 face each other at Kings Park on Saturday, when the unbeaten Natal Sharks take on the Lions, who have registered two wins from their three matches so far. The Sharks have had the benefit of starting with two home games already, which have seen them defeat the Bulls and the Hurricanes, and will be hoping to make it three from three on their own soil when they play the Lions. The Lions, back in Super Rugby, having missed out on participation in 2013, started their campaign with an upset 21-20 win at the Cheetahs, before following up with an emphatic home win against the Stormers. The bubble burst last weekend at Loftus Versfeld, where the fell to a first loss, against the Bulls.

The Sharks are the only South African side that has yet to lose a game this season, and another win this weekend against the Lions, will put them in the driving seat in the South African Conference, even at this early stage of the season. Especially with the Cheetahs and the Stormers having to play tough away games this coming weekend, and the Bulls taking on an in form Blues.
