The clash of round 4 in Super Rugby 2016, takes place at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, when the side placed fourth in the table, the Stormers, host the table topping Brumbies from Australia. After starting the season with two try-scoring bonus point victories, the Stormers' unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end last weekend, when they slipped to a 13-18 home reverse against the Sharks. The game against the Brumbies will be the first time this season that the Stormers have faced opposition from outside the Republic. Having defeated the Bulls 33-9 and the Cheetahs 20-10, prior to the Sharks loss.

The most recent meeting of the teams, came in last season's play-off, when the Brumbies thrashed the Stormers at Newlands by 39-19, scoring 6-1 tries. The Stormers had won the regular season clash at the same venue by 25-24. The Brumbies head the overall table, and along with the Sharks, are the only sides with 100% winning records at the end of three rounds of competition. They have crossed their opponents line 15 times already, while their defence has given up just five tries. Having started the season with a bonus point thrashing of last season's runners-up, the Hurricanes, by 52-10, the team from Canberra recorded a second home win against the Waratahs 32-15, before making the long journey to Perth, where they defeated the Force 31-14.

The Stormers are the lone South African side to have made it through to the knockout phase of Super Rugby 2015, and that comes courtesy of finishing at the top of their national Conference. The Crusaders, who finished in seventh place on the overall table, actually accumulated more points than the Cape Town based outfit. However, the system is in place, and all 16 teams know before the commencement of the tournament what they have to do to take the title, and as a result the Stormers host the Brumbies at Newlands on Saturday. The Stormers had the luxury of knowing that their play-off place was already assured before last weekends final regular season fixture, and they made 14 changes to their line-up, in order to rest key players ahead of the Brumbies clash. The subsequent 12-34 loss against the Sharks, was of no consequence to the tournament whatsoever. It is as recent as Round 13 that the sides met in this season’s competition. The match was played at Newlands, with the Stormers edging home by 25-24, although the Brumbies were ahead on the try count by 2-1.

The Brumbies have found themselves playing flat out to the end of the season, as they went head to head with the reigning Champions, the Waratahs, at the top of the Australian Conference. Their hopes of taking the Conference title, and progressing straight to a home semi-final, were ended by the Crusaders in the final round, who won the vital Canberra clash.

The Stormers face the Brumbies at Newlands on Saturday in Round 13 of the 2015 Super Rugby tournament, having slipped off of the top of the South African Conference, with a 17-25 reverse in Bloem against the Cheetahs last weekend. However, the Bulls who replaced them at the top of the Conference have a bye this weekend, which could allow the Stormers to rise once more to the summit as the season reaches its climax. The Stormers have won three of their four home games this season, with only the Chiefs emerging from Newlands victorious, securing a fine 28-19 win. The two games that they have played against Australian sides in 2015 were both away from home, and both ended in success for the South Africans. A stunning 32-18 win against the reigning Champions the Waratahs in Sydney, and a 13-6 win in Perth against the Force.

The Brumbies themselves suffered defeat in a vital game last weekend, when they went down to the Waratahs in Canberra, by just 10-13. They remain top of the Australian standings, but have just a one point advantage over the Champions who also have a game in hand. The Waratahs loss was the Brumbies third in the last four fixtures, and unless they can turn their form round quickly, they could find themselves missing out on a play-off place.
