Saturday 25th February 17:30 GMT

Round 1 of Super Rugby 2017 is concluded at Newlands in Cape Town, with a South African derby on Saturday between the Stormers and the Bulls. The Stormers finished in fifth position on the overall ladder in 2016, but such was the qualifying process, that they claimed a home tie in the quarter-finals. However, it did them little good, as they were thrashed by the visiting Chiefs. Apart from the Chiefs, the Sharks and the Waratahs were also victorious at Newlands. The Stormers did however, defeatSaturday's visitors in Round 1 a year ago by 33-9, and 3-0 tries. Apart from the Sharks result, the Stormers won their other three derby fixtures on home soil in 2016.

The Bulls missed out on the play-offs in 2016, finishing ninth on the overall ladder. They managed to win four of their eight games on the road, including two derby fixtures, at the Kings and the Cheetahs. Admittedly, two sides that finished in the bottom five of the table. The other two successes were also against struggling outfits, the Force in Perth and the Asian based Sunwolves. All five of the most recent meetings between the two sides in Cape Town, have gone the way of the home side.

A South African derby between the Stormers and the Bulls at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town, will bring the curtain down on the first round of Super Rugby action for 2016 on Saturday. The Stormers finished at the top of the South African Conference in 2015, suffering just five defeats during the regular season, but found themselves outclassed by the Brumbies in the play-offs, despite the benefit of home advantage. The only team to successful visit Newlands in the 2015 regular season, was the Chiefs. Although the Lions did manage to secure a draw at the venue. The Bulls were beaten by 13-15 when they travelled to Saturday's venue, despite scoring the only try of the match. The Stormers who have only managed to qualify for one Grand Final, which was back in 2010, when they were beaten by the Bulls, who were claiming a third title in the space of four seasons, are being heavily tipped to at the very least win their Conference.

The Stormers start the 2016 campaign with three fixtures in South Africa, and they do not have to face New Zealand opposition at all during the regular season, The Bulls had a disappointing 2015, when they only managed a third place finish in their national Conference, although they were only seven points behind the winners, the Stormers. Five successive defeats to end the season, saw their challenge extinguished in disappointing fashion. The Bulls have lost the last three meetings between the two teams, the last win they recorded against the Stormers, coming in Pretoria in 2014, when they managed to win by 28-12.

Newlands in Cape Town hosts a potentially titanic South African derby on Saturday, when the top two sides in the national conference, the Stormers and the Bulls, go head to head. The Bulls just have the edge over their rivals, with a two point buffer after 10 Rounds of the 2015 tournament. Both sides are playing well enough, and picking up sufficient points to both have hopes of making the post-season play-offs.

The Stormers have won all three of their South African derbies this season, including a 29-17 win against Saturday’s opponents at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in the opening round of the season. They may also hold an advantage over their rivals for top spot, as they have already completed their overseas tour, when they enjoyed two important wins to finish their trip, defeating the Waratahs32-18 in Sydney and the Force by 13-6 in Perth. The Bulls made a terrible start to the campaign, losing their two opening games, before recovering to win six of the next seven. Their only loss during that run coming away to the Lions, when they were squeezed out by 18-22. The Stormers have held the upper hand since they went down to the Bulls in the 2011 final, winning six of the subsequent nine matches between the sides.

Stormers host the Bulls at Newlands Stadium Cape Town on Saturday in a fixture that has little at stake other than pride for both teams following disappointing Super Rugby campaigns in 2014. The home team has managed just six wins from 14 games this season, and is in eleventh position on the overall table. Such has been the poor performances of the South African sides in general this season, which they are third in their national conference. The Bulls haven't performed much better than their hosts on Saturday in 2014. They have also recorded a mere six victories, with a draw to add to that record from their 14 fixtures. They are immediately above the Stormers on the table, knowing that even two bonus point victories to finish the season are highly unlikely to propel them into a wild card play-off place.

Stormers did produce one of the shocks of the season in their last fixture, which was way back at the end of May, when they scored a stunning 21-19 win at the Sharks, who suffered the consequence of fielding under-strength XV. There are six changes to the side that won that game, three being positional. Springbok flanker Schalk Burger captains the team on his return to Stormers duty. Frans Ludeke, the Bulls coach has made four personnel changes and one positional switch to the team that was beaten by the Lions in their last Super Rugby fixture.

The Bulls were outplayed by the Sharks for most of last weekend’s clash at Loftus, but did just enough to sneak home by a single point, with Morne Steyn’s pinpoint accuracy with the boot, in stark comparison to Pat Lambie’s inconsistency for the men from Durban, proving to be the difference. Steyn kicked all his goals and also set up Bjorn Basson for a try with a brilliant crossfield kick to take advantage of the floundering Sharks defence. Centre Jan Serfontein however picked up an injury and is replaced by Francois Venter while Wilhelm Steenkamp’s suspension has given a spot on the bench to exciting youngster Jacques du Plessis, one of South Africa’s stars at the recently concluded U20 World Cup. The Stormers have benched Elton Jantjies, with Joe Pietersen’s injury forcing coach Allister Coetzee to start Gary van Aswegen at 10 and shift Gio Aplon to full back in order to have more varied kicking options. Jean de Villiers returns to captain the side, while veteran winger Bryan Habana will play his final game for the Cape side ahead of his switch to Toulon.
