Stormers                          Cheetahs
Saturday 28th May 13:00 GMT

The Stormers welcome the Cheetahs to their Newlands home in Cape Town on Saturday, for a vital Super Rugby fixture, their last before the International Summer break, seeking to bring an end to a run of three games without a win. Since beating the visiting Reds in Round 9 by 40-22, the Stormers have been beaten at Newlands by the Waratahs, were surprisingly held to a draw away to the Sunwolves, and lost at Loftus last week to the Bulls by 13-17. As the result of their winless run of games, the Stormers have fallen outside of the play-off places. They trail the Bulls in African Conference 1 on points difference, but are three points worse off than the Sharks and five worse off than the lions. The Sharks have however, played a game more than all of their rivals.

The Cheetahs are well and truly out of the race for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2016 competition, having managed just three wins, and collected just 16 points from their 11 fixtures. When the sides met earlier in the season in Bloemfontein, the Stormers outscored the home team by 2-1 tries, and won the match by 20-10. The Cheetahs have won one of four derby matches this season, against the bottom of the table Kings in Bloem by 34-20 in Round 12. Their other victories came home and away against the Sunwolves, who are immediately above the Kings in the overall table.

The top of the South African Conference the Stormers, host the bottom team the Cheetahs, in Cape Town on Saturday. The hosts will hope that they can secure a win that will strengthen their position ahead of the Lions and the Bulls, who they lead by two and three points respectively. Although the three teams at the head of the Conference have little to chose between them, it appears likely that only the Conference topping side will make it through to the post-season play-offs. Victory over the bottom side appears absolutely essential for the Stormers chances. Although they defeated the Rebels 31-15 in Newlands last weekend, the Stormers failed to secure a try-scoring bonus point. However, a game in hand on the Lions, and with the Bulls playing in Canberra against the Brumbies this weekend, the Stormers could find themselves with one foot in the knockout stages come the end of Round 16.

The Cheetahs may have had a difficult season, with just four wins to their credit, they are the only South African side to beat the Stormers this season, 25-17 in Round 12 in Bloem. However, they have only managed to cross the Stormers line in one of their last four visits to Newlands, where they have only ever managed one win.

It is a sad reflection of the overall state of South African Super Rugby, when a game between the Stormers and the Cheetahs, with just a handful of regular season matches left to play, is a dead rubber. Between the two sides, they have recorded just seven wins out of the 25 matches they have played in the current campaign. The Stormers have four of those victories, all of which have come at their Newlands home, where their only loss came at the hands of the Waratahs.

The Cheetahs have managed three wins and a draw this season, but have lost all six games that they have played away from home. Those sad playing records have left the Stormers in 13th position on the Super Rugby table, a single point and place behind Saturday's visitors. Though the Cheetahs have played a game more. The Stormers will have both their captain and his vice skipper in the starting XV at the weekend, with Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger in the XV to start the match. The home side also bring back Kurt Coleman to wear the No.10 jersey, and give the loosehead prop Alistair Vermaak a first ever Super Rugby start.

The Cheetahs lost 25-30 to the Bulls in Bloemfontein before the break. Thankfully for Naka Drotske, none of his Bok stars- Willie le Roux, Adriaan Strauss, Coenie Oosthuizen and Trevor Nyakane, picked up injuries on international duty. Nyakane is on the bench with Oosthuizen preferred at loosehead this weekend, while former Sharks youngster Howard Mnisi finds a surprising spot on the bench. The Stormers will be without skipper Jean de Villiers this weekend and the Cheetahs’ established centre pairing of Sadie and Ebersohn will be keen to outplay their WP counterparts. The previous meeting between the two sides saw the Cheetahs prevail thanks to a late Burton Francis penalty. Will the Free State Cheetahs upset the Stormers at Newlands?
