A win for the Stormers in the South African derby on Saturday against the Lions at Newlands, will clinch the national Conference for the hosts, and keep them in with a very real chance of a home semi-final in the play-offs. The Lions are just three points behind the Stormers, and a win would lift them above their hosts for a week at least. But Saturday is the Lions last regular season fixture, and even a bonus point win might not be enough to see them through to the play-offs, by the end of next weekend.

The Stormers are certainly the South African side in form, with last week's thumping 42-12 win against the Cheetahs, being a sixth win in seven starts. The only reverse during that spell came at the Cheetahs in Round 12. If the Lions are to maintain their interest in this season's Super Rugby tournament to the last week of the regular season, they will need to become just the second side, after the Chiefs in Round 5, to beat the Stormers in their own stadium. Indeed, the Chiefs are the only visiting side to take the points away from Newlands in the past four campaigns.

When the teams met in Johannesburg in Round 3 this season, the Stormers won a tight contest by 22-19. One of 15 wins they have recorded from 20 matches against Saturday's visitors. The last time that the Lions managed to win in Cape Town was back in 2001, seven visits since have all ended in defeat.

It is sad to say that the Stormers against the Lions Super Rugby match will hardly set the pulses racing of Super Rugby fans this Saturday. In truth, the fans of both teams will struggle to get excited about the clash. The Lions have managed to score just 11 tries all season, while in a game less, the Stormers have crossed the whitewash just 10 times. The Stormers are bottom of the table, with just a single victory from their seven games, while the Lions, although able to boast of a 50% winning record, four wins from eight games, have failed to record a single bonus point this season, which says a lot for the way that they have won the games.

The Stormers might hope to get a second win of the season, based on their record against the Lions, having won 13 out of the last 14 matches between the teams. Though that single Lions win, was earlier in the season, in Johannesburg when the Lions won comfortably by 34-10, though even that emphatic victory failed to produce a try scoring bonus point. At least the Stormers might have some excuse for their poor record and position; they have certainly been hampered by the luck of the draw with the way that their fixtures have fallen. They have played six of their eight games so far away from home, all of which have resulted in defeat.

We find the Lions in the second to last spot in the standings, having won just two of the thirteen games played, with the other eleven resulting in a loss. They have 20 points, which is just one more point than the Blues who are in last place right now.
